This Is How To Avoid Damaging Your Car When Parking

Posted on February 27, 2026 By Becky

Every time you get in your car and go somewhere,  it results in new parking at the end of your journey.  Sadly, parking can be one of the most challenging tasks to perform in a car,  and one that can lead to damage that reduces the value of your vehicle as well as its aesthetic charm.  The good news is you can find out how to minimise your chances of damaging your car while parking,  as well as get some advice on what to do if you do end up denting,  dinging,  or scraping it, below.

Improve Your Parking Skills

It may seem obvious, but getting better at parking will definitely help you to minimize if not completely avoid, damaging your vehicle.  Of course, as parking involves a lot of precision in tight spaces, it’s important to practice safe driving skills such as controlled steering and parking in a slow and calm manner.  It’s also a good idea to make sure that you get accustomed to checking all your mirrors and blind spots when parking, as this will help you avoid otherwise unseen obstacles.

Select Safer Parking Spots

Not all parking spots are created equal. In fact, some are far safer and so much more beneficial if you are looking to avoid damage to your car when parking.  For example, corner spaces tend to be a tighter fit and often lead to paint and bodywork scraping on walls and pillars.

Similarly, parking spots close to trolley parks are usually there as the incidents of people accidentally running trolleys into nearby vehicles are much higher in this location.  Last of all, we’re able to try and park away from any particularly crowded space.  This can help avoid damage to your vehicle because the fewer vehicles that are parked around yours, the less likely your car is likely to be dinged by another’s door.

Dealing With Damage After Parking

Unfortunately, even the most careful driver can be vulnerable to damaging their car when parking.  The good news is that if you do end up with the scrape, scratch, or ding, you don’t have to drive around with it that way forever. Instead,d all you need to do is take it to your local Car Body Shop, where they will be able to make it look like new again. The great thing is that when you choose professional repair damage, you will not only ensure your vehicle looks its best, but you can save money as small repairs are often much more cost-effective than claiming for them on your insurance.

Before You Leave Your Car In A Parking Spot

Finally, before you leave your car in any parking spot, it’s crucial to remember that you need to make sure it’s as protected from damage by other drivers as possible.  One aspect of this is making sure your mirrors are properly folded in to avoid them being hit by passing cars.  You will also need to make sure you park well within the lines of the space,  as this will not only help you to avoid collisions but also ensure that other drivers do not open their car doors onto your vehicle, damaging it in the process.

Extra Tips to Prevent Parking Damage

  • Use your reversing camera and sensors properly — they’re there to help, but still combine them with mirror checks for full awareness.

  • Park nose-out when possible so leaving the space is easier and less rushed, reducing the chance of bumps.

  • Avoid parking next to poorly positioned vehicles as they increase the risk of door dings and accidental contact.

  • Take advantage of end spaces with extra room when available, as they offer more manoeuvring space on at least one side.

  • Slow down even more in tight car parks — most parking damage happens when drivers feel rushed or distracted.

  • Be mindful of kerbs when parallel parking to prevent wheel and alloy damage.

  • Park under good lighting at night so you can clearly see obstacles and make it easier for other drivers to notice your vehicle.

Careful parking habits may feel slow in the moment, but they can save you from costly repairs and frustration later.
