From Burnout to Balance: What a Simple Hobby Can Do Posted on February 17, 2026 By Becky In this day and age, hobbies have been left on the side in many people’s lives. Whether it be because of work, stress, or something in between, more and more people are losing touch with hobbies. Here are a few benefits of having a hobby you love. Reduces Mental Stress & Pressure Firstly, whether you pick up one of the many Globe skateboards to pick up skating, or a Dungeons and Dragons starter kit, hobbies have the incredible ability to drastically reduce mental stress and pressure. Hobbies take you out of the world that is causing you stress and pressure, which allows you to decompress, catch your breath, and reset. Additionally, the pressure to be better at your hobby is far more manageable and is in your control, which helps you feel more control over the overall stress and pressure in your life. Improves Mental Health When you reduce stress in your life, your mental health improves. No matter how small the stressor is, many people still underestimate just how much of a toll it can take on their mental health, especially if they don’t deal with it. However, giving some of your time to a hobby, doing something that is completely unrelated to the norm, and far away from the stress in your life, will make you happier and calmer. Mindfulness Mindfulness is another thing that many people have lost touch with. In short, being mindful is the ability to focus on one thing, give it the attention it deserves, and allow yourself to enjoy it the entire time you are doing the particular thing. A hobby, at the very least, forces mindfulness and forces you to be in the moment, which is a skill that you can take into other parts of your life. Improved Creativity No matter what hobby you choose, whether it is skateboarding, painting, writing poetry, or something in between, hobbies are incredible at building your creativity and teaching you how to think outside of the box. This is especially true for creative hobbies, as every day you will find out there is something you can’t do, but you want the result, meaning you have to either figure it out, or think outside the box and use the skills and materials you have. Builds Skills Speaking of skills, there is arguably no more enjoyable way to build new skills than through a hobby. Art can build your painting skills, D&D can build your storytelling skills, and so on. Even if it is a skill that you can only use within your hobby, it is still something new that you taught yourself. You also develop a range of secondary skills, such as learning to work with different people and to be part of a team. Builds Self-Confidence When you build new skills and talents, especially ones you didn’t think you could do, you automatically start to feel more confident in yourself and your abilities. For instance, if you take up cooking, how incredible would you feel making a delicious meal for your partner or family? Self-improvement and self-confidence are tied together, and as you become more skilled in your chosen hobby, you will see your self-confidence skyrocket. Social Connections Hobbies are also a brilliant way to make new friends and meet new people. In most major cities, you will find knitting circles, skateparks, book clubs, and almost everything in between. Even if you don’t live near a group that shares your hobby, with the internet, you can find an online community that allows you to connect with like-minded people and share your passion for your hobby. Encourages Personal Growth Building skills, interacting with new people, and making new friends are the pillars of personal growth. One of the many problems people have nowadays is feeling stagnant, feeling like they aren’t getting anywhere new, and hobbies can change that. Even if you don’t join a group or community, the sense of achievement you will feel as you get better with your hobby will make you feel like you are moving forward and that you can achieve more than you may have thought. Can Improve Physical Health It goes without saying that your physical health will drastically improve if you take up a new physical hobby. Whether it is pickleball, hiking, swimming, or something in between, you will start to notice improvements almost immediately. This is also brilliant for those who don’t want to go to the gym or feel uncomfortable working out in a public space. The gym isn’t for everyone, but it also isn’t the only way to get fit and strong and improve your health. Supports Identity Beyond Work Finally, another issue many people face today, in a world where working and working as much as possible is seemingly encouraged, is that they lose sight of who they are outside the office, on business calls, etc. A hobby gives you an identity outside of work, gives you something else to think and talk about, and allows you to express who you are without the need for it to be tied to your job.
