How to Build a Hair Routine You Can Actually Stick To

Posted on January 9, 2026 By Becky

Many 10 step hair care routines that go viral online are unrealistic for everyone to follow. Especially when routines are long and products are expensive. Let’s explore how you can build a routine that actually works for you, one that helps you see results without sacrificing too much of your precious time.

Auditing Your Current Collection

Before you dive into any new products or techniques, carry out an audit of your current haircare collection. Try to honestly evaluate what you use and what’s just gathering dust. Are there products you bought on a whim but never really use? Do some shampoos and conditioners promise life-changing results, but never really deliver?

You don’t have to throw everything out. However, understanding what’s truly worth keeping will make things easy and simple for you. For example, if you’ve been using a product that claims to help with hair growth but haven’t seen any noticeable changes, it might be time to consider other natural hair growth products or treatments that have more proven efficacy.

Integrating High-Performance Topicals

Next, instead of being swayed by the latest trend or flashy marketing, invest in items that actually make a difference based on your hair type and needs. Depending on your hair texture and if you have curly, straight, fine, or thick hair, choose products that support your scalp health and hair texture.

For example, if your hair is prone to dryness, look for moisturizing shampoos and conditioners that offer hydration without weighing it down. If you’re concerned about thinning, incorporate topical treatments that contain ingredients like biotin, caffeine, or essential oils known for promoting growth. Avoid the temptation to overcomplicate things with too many products. A simple, high-quality shampoo, conditioner, and a weekly leave-in treatment can do wonders when used consistently.

Mastering the “Scalp-First” Wash Technique

Follow these steps to master the scalp-first technique:

  1. Apply a Pre-Wash Treatment: Let it sit for a few minutes to allow nutrients to penetrate, preparing the scalp for cleansing.
  2. Massage the Scalp: This boosts blood flow and helps loosen up any build-up that might be clogging the hair follicles.
  3. Shampoo the Scalp First: This removes dirt and oil from your scalp, which can lead to scalp irritation and hair loss.
  4. Apply Suds to the Ends: This avoids stripping moisture from the lengths, which helps keep your hair soft and healthy.

By making this small adjustment to your routine, you’ll improve your scalp health, support natural growth, and leave your hair feeling fresh and light.

Scheduling Maintenance Trims and Deep Treatments

You’ve probably heard it a thousand times: “Get regular trims!” But there’s a reason why this advice is so consistent. Scheduling maintenance trims every six to eight weeks not only helps keep your ends healthy and free from split ends, but it also boosts your hair’s overall appearance. Healthy ends give your hair a fuller look.

In addition to trims, consider incorporating deep conditioning treatments every month. These treatments replenish moisture, restore damaged hair, and create a smooth, shiny finish. By sticking to a regular schedule, you’ll notice less frizz and fewer split ends, and your hair will feel much healthier over time.

Building a hair routine doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. By focusing on the essentials, integrating habits into your lifestyle, and sticking to small yet effective changes, you can achieve long-lasting results without overwhelming yourself
