How Engaged Customers Fuel Pharmacy Referrals

Posted on September 24, 2025 By Becky

A pharmacy looking to draw in new customers must focus on its existing ones. It costs significantly less to retain existing clients than to attract new ones. Patient referrals are an excellent way to grow the business.

How can a pharmacy fuel referrals? This question is on the mind of many, as pharmacies that retain patient engagement are more successful. Personalized services and constant communication are two ways to keep engagement levels high. Try the following techniques to increase engagement and see a rise in patient referrals.

Reward Loyalty

Paid advertising can never match the benefits of word-of-mouth advertising. Pharmacies should appreciate their loyal customers and show them appreciation. Send them a birthday card. Consider establishing a loyalty rewards program or offering a discount on retail items to regular customers.

Referral Incentives

To increase referrals, consider offering a discount for each new referral. Both the loyal client and the new customer benefit from the discount, and the new customer may then refer someone new. Pharmacies often hesitate to take this step, as they wonder how much the discount will cost them over the long run. They actually make more money thanks to the new customers using the pharmacy. Another option is to give a customer $10 cash every time they refer a new person to the pharmacy. Each organization must determine which method will be most effective and use it consistently.

Request Reviews

Every pharmacy should be asking its customers to leave positive reviews. According to BrightLocal, 97 percent of consumers read online reviews before trying a new business. On average, they read ten reviews before trust is established and 40 reviews before they will believe the pharmacy’s star rating. Ensure they have plenty to read on social media, Yelp, and Google. Consider including a small flyer with each prescription that requests a review, or placing a sign on the counter that invites customers to share their experience with the business online.

Education

Patients want to know more about medical and prescription-related issues. Use the pharmacy website, email, and social media platforms to provide information about medical topics and prescription medications, and use a variety of media to engage with consumers, including blog posts and videos. Be relatable when creating these posts to draw people in and ensure the information is relevant and informative without being too salesy. Viewers may then share the post, expanding the reach of the pharmacy.

Customer Appreciation Days

Consider hosting customer appreciation days, offering loyal clients discounts, treats, and small token gifts. They will remember this event and tell their family and friends about the amazing pharmacy they use. Small things like this will show customers they are valued and appreciated. When a business treats them as more than a name and number or a source of revenue, they reward it with their patronage.

Referrals are the easiest way to grow any business, and they cost a business little, if anything. When a person feels confident about their pharmacy’s ability to provide them with the care and service they need, they will let others know. Word-of-mouth advertising is priceless in a world where people are bombarded with ads everywhere they go. Make the most of this phenomenon and encourage referrals whenever possible. The strategies outlined above are an excellent way to encourage customers to share the pharmacy with everyone they know.
