Sarah Jessica Parker Lovely Perfume review

Sarah Jessica Parker ‘Lovely’ Perfume Review

Posted on September 23, 2025 By Becky

Key Takeaways

  • What it smells like: A soft, musky-woody-floral fragrance with prominent lavender, bergamot, and rosewood notes
  • Best for: Women aged 25+ looking for an office-appropriate, sophisticated everyday scent
  • Longevity: Excellent – lasts 8-12 hours on most people (some report 24+ hours!)
  • Price point: Brilliant value at around £25 for a large bottle on Amazon
  • Bottom line: A well-crafted celebrity fragrance that punches well above its weight class

Right, let me tell you about my latest fragrance obsession – and honestly, I’m as surprised as you are that it’s a celebrity perfume! You know how it is when you’re constantly nabbing your teenager’s beauty products? Well, that’s exactly what happened with Sarah Jessica Parker’s ‘Lovely’ perfume. My 13-year-old got it as a Christmas present from her Nanny, and I kept sneaking sprays of it every morning. Eventually, I felt so guilty that I decided to buy my own bottle – and am I glad I did!

I managed to buy a massive bottle on Amazon for about £25, which is honestly incredible value when you consider how long this stuff lasts. But before I talk about whether it’s actually any good, let me answer the burning questions you’ve probably got about this fragrance.

What Does Sarah Jessica Parker’s Perfume Actually Smell Like?

The first thing that hits you with Lovely is this gorgeous blend of bergamot and lavender – but not that sharp, medicinal lavender that makes you think of your gran’s bathroom cabinet. This is softer, more rounded, almost creamy. As it settles on your skin (and trust me, give it at least 30 minutes), you start to notice the rosewood coming through, along with this lovely musky base that feels incredibly sophisticated.

I’ve been wearing perfume for years – you can check out my other beauty product reviews to see what else I’ve been testing – and I can honestly say this doesn’t smell like what you’d expect from a celebrity fragrance. There’s no sickly sweet vanilla or overwhelming florals. Instead, it’s got this clean, fresh quality that feels very grown-up.

The ‘apple martini’ note that’s supposedly in there? I can’t say I really detect it, but there’s definitely something that gives it a bit of sparkle in the opening. It’s subtle though – not like you’re walking around smelling like a cocktail bar!

What Age Group Is Sarah Jessica Parker Perfume For?

This is where Lovely really shines, actually. Unlike so many fragrances that seem targeted at either teenagers or women over 50, this feels like it could work for pretty much any age. I’m in my early 40s, and it feels perfect for my daily life – school runs, work meetings, evenings out.

What I love is that it’s sophisticated enough for professional settings but not so stuffy that you feel like you’re wearing your mother’s perfume. My daughter, at 13, likes it, but I think it would work even better on someone a bit older who can really appreciate those woody, musky undertones.

According to fragrance experts at Fragrantica, perfumes with these particular woody-musky profiles tend to suit women best from their twenties onwards, as younger skin doesn’t always bring out the complexity of the base notes properly.

What Was Sarah Jessica Parker’s First Perfume?

Lovely was actually SJP’s debut fragrance, launched back in 2005. Can you believe this perfume is 20 years old? It really doesn’t feel dated at all, which speaks volumes about how well it was created. It was created by perfumers Laurent Le Guernec and Clement Gavarry – proper industry professionals, not just some celebrity cash-grab situation.

The fact that this was her first venture into fragrance makes it even more impressive. Sarah Jessica Parker was apparently very hands-on with the development process, and you can tell. She’s spoken in interviews about not wanting a perfume that “dominated the room,” and Lovely definitely fits that brief.

Is SJP Lovely a Dupe of Anything?

Now this is interesting! There’s been loads of chatter online about Lovely being similar to Narciso Rodriguez For Her, and I can sort of see why people make that comparison. Both have that clean, musky quality and aren’t overly floral or sweet. But honestly, having smelled both, I think they’re quite different perfumes.

Narciso Rodriguez For Her is much more intense and has this almost aldehydic quality that can be a bit much for some people. Lovely is much softer and more approachable. If anything, I’d say Lovely is like the friendlier cousin of Narciso Rodriguez – it gives you that sophisticated musk vibe without being quite so in-your-face about it.

Some people also compare it to certain Clean fragrances or even some of the lighter Hermès offerings, but I think that’s doing Lovely a disservice. It’s got its own personality.

My Honest Review: The Good, The Bad, and The Surprising

The Good:

  • Longevity is awesome – seriously, I put this on at 7am for the school run and I’m still catching whiffs of it when I’m getting ready for bed
  • Office-appropriate – I work sometimes in quite a conservative environment when visiting clients and this never feels inappropriate
  • Compliment magnet – I’ve had more people ask what I’m wearing since I started using this than with any other perfume
  • Doesn’t give you a headache – some fragrances can be overwhelming, but this sits close to the skin
  • The price point – honestly, for approx £25, this is an absolute steal

The Not-So-Good:

  • Can be a bit safe – if you’re looking for something really unique or avant-garde, this isn’t it
  • The bottle design – it’s nice enough, but nothing special
  • Initial citrus fades quickly – that lovely bergamot opening doesn’t hang around for long

The Surprising: What really shocked me is how much this has grown on me. I wasn’t immediately obsessed when I first tried it, but after wearing it for a few weeks, I found myself reaching for it constantly. It’s one of those fragrances that just works with your skin chemistry and becomes part of your daily routine.

Why Does Lovely Work So Well?

According to perfume industry analysis from Allure Magazine, fragrances with this particular combination of musks and woods have what’s called “skin chemistry compatibility” – basically, they adapt to work with a wide range of people’s natural scent profiles. That’s probably why this has such broad appeal and why so many people report getting compliments when wearing it.

The rosewood note is particularly clever – it’s warm enough to feel cosy but fresh enough not to be overwhelming. Combined with that soft lavender and the clean musk base, it creates what perfumers call a “comfort scent” – something that makes both the wearer and people around them feel at ease.

How Does It Compare to Other Celebrity Fragrances?

Let’s be honest – celebrity fragrances often get a bad rap, and often deservedly so. They’re frequently cheap, overly sweet, and smell like they were designed by committee. But Lovely is genuinely different.

Compared to something like Britney Spears’ fragrances of the time (which tend to be very young and fruity) or even some of the more recent celebrity launches that are heavy on the vanilla and sugar, Lovely feels sophisticated and thoughtful. It’s more in line with what you’d expect from a proper perfume house than a celebrity cash-grab.

The Verdict: Should You Buy It?

Look, I’m not going to pretend this is the most groundbreaking fragrance ever created. It’s not going to change your life or make you feel like a completely different person. But you know what? Sometimes that’s exactly what you want.

Lovely is reliable, sophisticated, and incredibly wearable. It’s the kind of fragrance you can spray on without thinking about it and know you’ll smell good all day. For busy mums like us, that’s actually quite valuable!

At £25 for a large bottle, it’s also ridiculously good value. I’ve paid three times that for niche fragrances that don’t perform half as well or get nearly as many compliments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long does Lovely actually last? On me, it’s easily 8-10 hours. Some people report it lasting even longer – up to 24 hours according to some reviews I’ve read online.

Q: Is it suitable for all seasons? I think it works year-round, though it really shines in spring and autumn. It might be a touch too cosy for really hot summer days.

Q: Where’s the best place to buy it? I got mine from Amazon, but it’s widely available. Just make sure you’re buying from a reputable seller.

Q: Does it work for sensitive skin? I haven’t had any issues, and it seems to be quite gentle. But as always, patch test first if you have sensitive skin.

Final Thoughts on SPJ’s Lovely Perfume

I never thought I’d be writing a glowing review of a celebrity perfume, but here we are! Sarah Jessica Parker’s Lovely has genuinely impressed me. It’s sophisticated without being pretentious, long-lasting without being overwhelming, and affordable without smelling cheap.

Would I choose it over some of my beloved niche fragrances for special occasions? Probably not. But for everyday wear – school runs, work, casual dinners out – this has become my go-to. And at this price point, there’s really no reason not to give it a try.

Plus, now Sasha and I can both wear it without me feeling guilty about constantly pinching hers. Win-win!
