3 Signs Your Child May Be Finding School Difficult

School can be quite the mixed bag for kids. Some love it, some don’t mind it, some find it boring, some absolutely hate it. And if your child falls into the latter camp, it could be that they’re finding school quite a struggle. 

After all, kids usually love finding out new things and being with their friends, but sometimes the level of difficulty involved in school life is just too much. 

But if your child is finding school difficult, you don’t have to leave them to work it out on their own. There will be a few signs you can look out for and then talk to them about the possibility. Here are three that are usually surefire enough to mean school is a bit of a challenge. 

Learning isn’t Fun

When you’re a kid, learning is an intrinsically fun thing to do. After all, you’re always learning about something or other! And schools in the modern age go out of their way to try and maintain that fun element. 

So when learning isn’t a fun thing, you have to ask if something is going wrong along the way. What is your child having trouble with that’s preventing their discovery from being an enjoyable thing? For example, it could be that they’re struggling to parse out letters and numbers. If that’s the case, investing in items like decodable books for kindergarten is a great start. This way your child will have language support written into the book they’re reading, and you can sit down with them to test the words out. 

They Never Want to Do Homework

But surely no kid really wants to do their homework! And there is some truth to that; homework isn’t number one on the list of fun after school activities for anyone. But when your child loathes homework and refuses to even try to do it, it could be another sign they’re struggling with school. 

Maybe they don’t understand the subject? Maybe it’s not been explained to them properly? Maybe they don’t like a classmate or even the teacher, and that makes them want to avoid any reminders of it? If homework tends to be a hotspot, sit down with your child and talk about the reason behind it. 

The Idea of School Causes Some Big Emotions

Some children aren’t shy about the fact that they don’t really want to go to school. Both younger children and teenagers alike can have some pretty big emotions over it, with refusals, tantrums, and meltdowns all being common. 

Once again, it’s key to get to the core of the issue. What’s making them so emotional over the fact they have to go to school? Let them explain it in their own time, no matter how long that takes (or how silly they end up feeling).

A lot of kids find school difficult, and every single one of them deserves some support with it. Look out for the signs above in your own child.
