How to Build Mini Golf at Your House: A Fun DIY Project

Posted on August 14, 2025 By Becky

Mini golf has been a favorite pastime for decades, offering a mix of skill, creativity, and lighthearted competition. While many people visit dedicated courses, it’s entirely possible to create your own version at home. Whether for family fun, entertaining guests, or simply enjoying a personal hobby, a homemade mini golf course can add character and entertainment to your space.

One of the best things about building mini golf at home is the flexibility. You can design it to suit your available area, from a small indoor corner to a sprawling backyard. Materials can be as simple or elaborate as you like, and the course can be temporary or permanent. The key is balancing playability with creativity, making sure it’s both fun and functional.

Planning Your Mini Golf Course

Before starting construction, it’s important to think about the size, style, and purpose of your course. Ask yourself:

  • Will it be indoors or outdoors?

  • How many holes do you want?

  • Do you want a theme, such as tropical, space, or classic golf green?

  • Will you use professional-style turf or household items for obstacles?

Sketching out a basic layout can help you visualise how the course will fit in your space. Consider leaving room for players to move comfortably between holes and avoiding overly narrow paths.

Choosing the Right Materials

The materials you select will depend on your budget and location. Common options include:

  • Artificial turf or carpet for smooth ball movement.

  • Plywood or MDF boards for building ramps and barriers.

  • Bricks, wooden planks, or PVC piping for borders.

  • Decorative items like plants, stones, or themed props to add character.

If building outdoors, weather-resistant materials will help your course last longer. Indoors, you have more flexibility with fabrics and lightweight props.

Adding Fun and Challenge

The charm of mini golf lies in its obstacles and challenges. This is where creativity can shine:

  • Ramps and slopes to test ball control.

  • Curved paths or tunnels made from PVC pipes.

  • Small bridges or raised platforms.

  • Moving parts powered by battery-operated motors for a playful twist.

If you’re looking for ideas on hole design and play strategy, resources such as FIRST’s golf guide can inspire new ways to make your course engaging for players of all ages.

Building and Setting Up

Once you’ve gathered materials and designed the layout, start assembling the holes one by one. It’s best to begin with a simple design and then add complexity. For example, start with a straight hole before creating winding paths with multiple obstacles. Use a hot glue gun, screws, or nails to secure materials depending on their weight and location.

Position obstacles in ways that encourage skill but also allow for occasional lucky shots — part of what makes mini golf so enjoyable. Test each hole several times to adjust slope angles, barrier heights, and ball movement.

Finishing Touches

A great mini golf course isn’t just about gameplay; it’s also about presentation. Add colorful flags to mark holes, use paint to decorate obstacles, and incorporate lighting for evening play. For themed courses, props can make the experience more immersive — think pirate ships, castles, or jungle scenes.

Once complete, your home mini golf course can serve as a recurring source of entertainment. It’s an activity that combines creativity, craftsmanship, and play, offering a unique way to enjoy time with friends and family without leaving home.
