How to Take the Fear Out of Changing Career

Posted on August 7, 2025 By Becky

Thinking of changing careers? Terrified? Excellent, you’re doing it right. Because let’s be honest: changing your career is one of those life decisions that’s both exciting and mildly terrifying, like cutting your own fringe or saying “we should get a dog.”

Maybe you’re fed up with your current job. Maybe your industry’s disappearing faster than your will to log into Zoom. Or maybe you’ve just realised you’ve been doing something you don’t actually enjoy (gasp) and want more from life than waiting for Friday at 5pm.

Whatever your reason, if the idea of making a career change gives you the wobbles, here’s how to take the fear out of it.

  1. Accept That Fear is Normal (And Useful)

If you’re waiting to feel 100% confident before switching careers, you’ll be waiting until retirement. Fear doesn’t mean “don’t do it”, it means “this matters.” It’s your brain trying to protect you from uncertainty. So instead of seeing fear as a stop sign, treat it like a backseat driver. Annoying, yes, but not in charge.

  1. Break It Down into Baby Steps

“Change career” sounds massive and vague, like saying “climb Everest.” But if you break it down into steps – research roles, update CV, talk to someone in the field, apply for one job – it becomes way more manageable (and less panic-inducing). Think evolution, not explosion.

  1. Start With What You Don’t Want

Sometimes it’s easier to define what’s not working than what you do want. Sick of spreadsheets? Tired of working weekends? Hate customer service with the fire of a thousand suns? Great – write it all down. You’re narrowing the field and moving closer to what does fit.

  1. Test the Waters Before You Dive In

Not sure if your dream job will actually suit you? Try it out in a small way first. Shadow someone, do a short course, take on a side hustle, or volunteer. It’s like trying on a new coat before committing to the price tag. You might love it…or realise it’s actually quite itchy.

  1. Don’t Dismiss “Unusual” Jobs

Some of the best career changes come from thinking outside the box. Always loved driving and want more independence? Why not look into car transporter jobs – yes, it’s a real thing, and a good one if you fancy being on the road and working with vehicles. The point is: don’t limit yourself to what’s obvious or “safe.” Explore the weird and wonderful.

  1. Talk to People Who’ve Done It

There’s nothing more reassuring than hearing someone say, “Yep, I made a big change, and it worked out.” Join career change forums, LinkedIn groups, or just chat with mates who’ve taken the leap. You’ll get advice, tips, and a bit of courage by osmosis.

  1. Remember: You’re Not Stuck

You are not a tree. You are not trapped. Your job title is not your destiny. People reinvent themselves at all stages of life, and you can too.

So, deep breath. Start small. Be brave. And remember: the first step might feel scary, but it’s also the step that gets you moving.

You’ve got this.
