The Best Pillow for Migraines: 7 Options from a Migraine Sufferer

Posted on July 27, 2025 By Becky

I’ve had the misfortune of suffering from migraines with aura since I was a child. If you’ve ever had one, you’ll know just how disruptive they can be – not just the pain, but the flashing lights, the nausea, the disorientation. I used to describe it as a thunderstorm behind my eyes, followed by a fog that could settle in for hours, or even days. They could be so disruptive (and still can be), especially for the 45 minutes or so that I really can’t see or do anything.

Now, as an adult, I’ve come to terms with living alongside them. But I’ll be honest – when my two eldest children started experiencing migraines, my heart sank. They describe the same symptoms I used to have at their age. I think theirs are hormonal, just like mine probably were, but it doesn’t make them any easier to watch. As a parent, you want to take the pain away, or at least help them rest when it comes.

And rest is most definitely key! Over the years, I’ve learned that the way I sleep can either ease a migraine, or make it significantly worse. One of the most surprisingly helpful things I’ve discovered? Using the right pillow to rest my head when a migraine strikes.

Yes, it sounds simple. But the right pillow can make a real difference, especially when you’re trying to sleep through a migraine or stop one in its tracks. Below, I’m sharing the seven best pillows I’ve tried (and researched) that helped me, and that I’ve recommended to friends, family, and now, my own children.

What to Look for in a Pillow If You Have Migraines

Before I share my pillow suggestions, here are a few things I’ve found make a real difference:

  • Neck and spine alignment: A migraine can be triggered – or prolonged – by tension in the neck and shoulders. A pillow that keeps your spine aligned can help reduce this.

  • Cooling features: Overheating can make my migraines worse, especially when I’m already nauseous. A cool pillow makes a surprising difference.

  • Pressure relief: A pillow that supports your head without pressing or pushing too much is key. If I feel “propped up” or too sunken, I often wake with pain behind my eyes.

The Best Pillow for Migraines – Available Options

1. Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Neck Pillow

This is the one we’ve tried at home. It’s shaped with a curve to support the natural curve of your neck, which can be helpful if tension or poor posture is one of your migraine triggers. It’s quite firm and definitely takes some getting used to, but once you adjust, it can really help with alignment overnight.

I tend to reach for this pillow when I feel a migraine coming on and want to rest in a neutral position. My eldest has also used it during rough nights. It’s not soft and squishy, so if you like that kind of pillow, it might not be the one, but it’s designed specifically to ease neck strain, which can make a difference.

2. Coop Home Goods Adjustable Loft Pillow

This pillow is filled with a blend of memory foam and microfiber and has a zippered cover so you can add or remove filling. That means you can adjust the loft and firmness to suit your sleeping style and how much support you need, whether you sleep on your back, side, or even a semi-reclined position during a migraine.

It also has a breathable, washable cover and is made with hypoallergenic materials, which is useful if you have allergies or sensitivities that might contribute to headaches or poor sleep.

3. The Purple Harmony Pillow

Known for its unique purple “grid” structure and latex core, this pillow is especially popular for its cooling abilities. The design allows for constant airflow, which helps prevent heat buildup, something many migraine sufferers appreciate, especially if they’re already battling sensitivity to temperature or nausea.

It’s more responsive than memory foam and has a bit of a bounce to it. The shape stays consistent through the night, and the breathable mesh cover adds another layer of airflow.

4. Mediflow Water Pillow

This pillow has a water chamber that you can fill to your preferred level of firmness. It’s designed to offer consistent support that adjusts to your movements and helps keep your head and neck properly aligned.

Some people report that the gentle movement of the water has a calming, almost soothing effect. And since it allows for fine-tuning the level of support, it may suit those who want to avoid pressure points without sacrificing structure.

5. Beckham Hotel Collection Gel Pillow

This is a popular, budget-friendly option that features a cooling gel fibre fill. It’s soft, plush, and generally suits back and side sleepers. While it doesn’t offer much in the way of neck correction or ergonomic design, its cooling properties and gentle support may appeal to those who want something simple and breathable.

It also has a no-shift construction, meaning the fill stays evenly distributed – important if you’re prone to waking up with one side flattened and your head in a weird angle.

6. Avocado Green Pillow

This pillow is filled with shredded latex and kapok fibers, offering a natural, non-toxic alternative for those who prefer organic materials. It’s adjustable, meaning you can remove or add fill to get the height just right, and it’s also breathable, which may help with heat sensitivity during migraines.

The mix of support and eco-conscious design is a bonus if you’re trying to reduce synthetic materials in your home or are sensitive to off-gassing from traditional memory foam.

7. Sobakawa Buckwheat Pillow

A traditional Japanese-style pillow filled with buckwheat hulls, the Sobakawa offers mouldable, breathable support. The hulls shift and adjust as you move, creating a custom cradle for your head and neck. Because of the air gaps between the hulls, it also tends to stay cool throughout the night.

It’s firmer and more textured than a typical Western pillow, so it’s not for everyone, but some migraine sufferers say the weight and support it offers help them relax and feel grounded.

Tips for Sleeping When You Have a Migraine

Of course, the pillow is just one piece of the puzzle. Here are a few things that have helped me (and now, my kids) sleep when a migraine hits:

1. Sleep in a dark, cool room.

We keep blackout blinds in the bedrooms and a fan nearby in summer. I also use a cold eye mask during bad migraines, and it helps with the light sensitivity and throbbing.

2. Try sleeping on your back or side.

Sleeping on your stomach can strain your neck, which (as I’ve learned the hard way) can sometimes kick off a migraine or make one worse.

3. Don’t underestimate routine.

Keeping a consistent sleep schedule, even at weekends, has helped reduce my overall frequency of migraines. I get more if I stay up too late or sleep in and then feel groggy. The kids are the same.

4. Magnesium before bed.

Obviously check with your doctor first, but magnesium supplements have helped both me and my eldest. They seem to reduce the intensity and frequency of migraines when taken regularly (I especially found this when my 3rd pregnancy seemed to trigger them more often, but obviously check with your doctor first!).

5. Journaling patterns.

We now track sleep, food, and stress patterns in a shared notebook. This has been especially helpful with the kids—we’ve noticed they often get migraines a few days before their period or after particularly stressful days.

What Works for One Might Not Work for Another

That’s the tricky thing about migraines is that they’re personal. What works for me (like the Tempur-Pedic) might not work for you. And that’s okay. Sometimes the best approach is to try a few things gently and see how your body responds.

If you’re reading this in the middle of a migraine, I’m sending you a virtual ice pack and a hug. They’re so, so awful, but you’re not alone. There are things that help, even if they take a bit of trial and error to find.

And if your child is going through them too, know that they’ll feel comforted just by having you there, supporting them, believing them, and helping them find their own coping strategies.

If you’ve found a pillow (or anything else) that’s helped with your migraines, I’d genuinely love to hear about it in the comments!
