How to Make an Easy Star Wars Birthday Cake Posted on July 1, 2025August 22, 2025 By Becky If you’ve got a little Jedi turning 8, there’s no better way to celebrate than with a homemade Star Wars birthday cake—especially one that’s tall, chocolatey on the inside, yet packed with galactic character on the outside. For my son’s birthday last week, I made a 4-tier Star Wars chocolate cake, inspired by Jane’s Patisserie’s chocolate drip cake recipe (but without the drip, only the actual cake!). With a sturdy sponge, creamy chocolate buttercream holding each cake tier together, green buttercream icing and fun fondant toppers like BB-8, Yoda, and lightsabers, it was a big hit with my little boy, and I’m so pleased I decided to give making it a go, even though it was a crazy-busy week! It wasn’t actually as much work as I was expecting. Here’s how to create your own Star Wars birthday cake – with everything you need to make it, and each step to creating it! The Cake: 4 Tier Chocolate Sponge I wanted a cake that could stand tall without collapsing, so I used a simple chocolate sponge cake recipe rather than a fudgy one. This gave me the structure I needed for a four-layer masterpiece. I was worried it might be too dry, but actually it was fine! Ingredients for your Star Wars cake (500g mix – for two 8” deep tins) ~500g eggs (in shells, about 8–9 medium eggs) ~500g unsalted butter (softened) ~500g caster sugar ~450g self-raising flour 50g cocoa powder 1 tsp vanilla extract 2–4 tbsp milk (if needed to loosen the batter) Method Prep your tins: Grease and line two deep 8” cake tins. Preheat oven to 160°C fan / 180°C conventional / 350°F. Cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time with a spoonful of flour to prevent curdling. Fold in the remaining flour, cocoa powder, and vanilla. Add milk if the batter feels too thick. Divide into the two tins and bake for 50–60 minutes, or until a skewer comes out clean. Cool completely, then wrap each cake in cling film and foil. Freeze overnight for easier decorating (optional but recommended!). Once frozen and thawed, slice each cake in half horizontally to create 4 even layers. The Cake Filling: Rich Chocolate Buttercream This creamy chocolate buttercream is perfect between the layers. It also helps glue the whole cake together securely, as well as helping it taste nice and moist. Chocolate Buttercream Ingredients 250g unsalted butter (room temperature) 500g icing sugar 75g cocoa powder 2–4 tbsp milk 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional) Method Beat butter until pale and fluffy. Gradually add sifted icing sugar and cocoa powder. Add milk 1 tbsp at a time until it reaches a smooth, spreadable consistency. Add vanilla extract if using. Use this to fill your cake. Chill the cake for 30 minutes before decorating the top. The Decoration: Star Wars Themed Icing & Toppers Galactic Green Buttercream For the outer layer, I used a basic vanilla buttercream dyed with green food colouring (mine was just from Tecso) to give it that Yoda-meets-lightsaber look. Simple Vanilla Buttercream: 250g unsalted butter 500g icing sugar 1 tsp vanilla extract Green food colouring Beat everything together in your mixer (I use a Kitchen Aid that I lurrrve) and add the green food colouring until it’s the shade you want. I didn’t want it too look too bright, but found I still needed more drops of the food colouring than I anticipated. Smooth this around the cake with a spatula or cake scraper for a clean finish. This took longer than I thought to get it looking fairly smooth! Star Wars Cake Toppers This is where the cake comes to life! I used Star Wars fondant toppers, which included: The Millennium Falcon cake topper BB-8 cake topper R2-D2 cake topper Yoda cake topper Fondant letters spelling my son’s name Fondant lightsabers (just roll thin red and blue tubes of fondant and add grey or black hilts) You can make your own toppers or order pre-made ones online or from a cake decorating shop. Stick them onto the top and sides of the cake with edible glue or a tiny dab of buttercream. This makes the whole process easy-peasy! Star Wars Cake Assembly Steps: Bake and cool your cakes. Freeze if preferred for easier slicing and decorating. Slice each cake into two even layers (4 layers total). Spread chocolate buttercream between each layer. Crumb coat the cake and chill. Add green buttercream all around. Decorate with fondant toppers and extra space-themed accents. Add candles and cue the theme music! Serving & Storing your Star Wars Birthday Cake This cake serves 20–24 kids (or fewer if your guests are extra hungry!) Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the fridge for 5 days. You can freeze leftover slices individually for future Jedi snack attacks. FAQs – Star Wars Cake Can I use shop-bought sponge or buttercream? Absolutely, either is fine. If you’re short on time, a boxed chocolate sponge and pre-made frosting will still be a crowd-pleaser once it’s decorated Star Wars-style. Can I make it gluten-free? Yes – substitute the self-raising flour with a gluten-free blend and add 1 tsp of xanthan gum. How far in advance can I make the cake? You can bake and freeze the sponges up to 1 month ahead. Assemble and decorate the day before the party for best results. What if I don’t have deep cake tins? Use four regular 8” tins and bake for slightly less time (around 25–30 mins). Just check with a skewer regularly so you don’t over bake them. Can I make this Star Wars birthday cake without fondant? Yes! If you’re not a fan of fondant, you can use printed edible cake toppers, plastic Star Wars figures (just make sure they’re clean), or pipe buttercream decorations like lightsabers and stars.
