Migration Readiness: Are You and Your Family Ready? Posted on May 13, 2025 By Becky Relocating to a new country is a decision that’s not to be taken lightly; this is especially true if the entire family is involved. It’s a major life change that will affect everyone in many different ways. While the move might be due to new opportunities, it’s also fraught with uncertainties and challenges. Whether you’re applying for a family migration visa in Australia or pursuing a new job abroad, migration readiness is key. It can spell the difference between a successful move and a disappointing experience. Assessing Your Readiness to Migrate Before you even start planning the move itself, you must reflect on the entire family’s readiness to relocate. Set a time to sit down with everyone involved and discuss everything–emotions, thoughts, finances, legalities and more. Everyone should feel heard and involved in making the decision, especially because everyone will be affected. It will take time for some family members to accept the idea of moving to another country. It will help if you outline all the whys, the hows, and the long-term goals the move will help achieve. It should be a family discussion to ensure that everyone is aligned and on the same page, to ensure their commitment to the journey ahead. Conduct Thorough Research and Planning You’ve probably looked into the cost of living, housing market, and education system of your destination country. But you should also research the culture, climate, language, healthcare and legal requirements. When processing family visas, different categories have different requirements that you need to comply with. Make sure you and your children meet the eligibility criteria for higher chances of approval. You also have to look into opening a bank account, buying insurance and more. Deal with the Stress and Struggle It’s a fact that migrating is anything but fun and easy. For most people, this means giving up their current job, losing the good life and lifestyle they have, losing the home they built, having no friends, and struggling with starting over again. It’s important to seriously face these concerns as a way to help you make a decision you won’t regret. If you see this as a major setback, but you’re determined to migrate, find ways to keep your spirits up. Face the stress now so you can bounce back fully prepared to face a new chapter. Prepare the Children for the Move Migrating might hit the children the hardest, especially if they’ve already made lifelong friends. The prospect of not knowing anyone or making new friends at a new school can be scary and unsettling. To make the change of environment less jarring for them, take them on a trip to your destination country if possible. This will give them a chance to gain firsthand experience of their new surroundings and to meet the locals. If this isn’t possible, have them watch travel guides and documentaries instead. Once everyone is comfortable with the idea of migrating and is ready to open a new chapter in their lives, you can work out the logistics. It’s better to hire movers only when the entire family is totally ready. If you need help moving to Australia with your family, Four Corners is the company to call.
