Understanding the Differences: European vs. American Roulette

Posted on March 31, 2025 By Becky

Roulette is one of the most exciting games in any casino. The thrill of watching the ball spin around the wheel and waiting to see where it lands is enough to keep players coming back for more. But did you know there are two main types of roulette? European and American roulette may look similar, but they have key differences that can affect your chances of winning. Let’s dive in and find out which one might be best for you!

Many players at online roulette wonder about these differences, and understanding them can help you make the right choice.

The Roulette Wheels: One Big Difference

At first glance, both versions of roulette might seem the same. However, if you look closely at the wheel, you’ll notice a big difference.

The European roulette wheel has 37 pockets, numbered from 0 to 36. The American roulette wheel has 38 pockets because it includes an extra double zero (00) slot.

This small change makes a huge difference in how the game plays out. The extra pocket in American roulette increases the house edge, which means the casino has a bigger advantage over players.

House Edge: Your Odds of Winning

The house edge is the percentage of money the casino expects to make from players over time.

  • In European roulette, the house edge is 7%.
  • In American roulette, the house edge jumps to 26% because of the extra double zero.

What does this mean for you? If you want better odds and a higher chance of winning, European roulette is the way to go!

The Betting Table: Different Layouts

Apart from the wheel, the table layouts are also slightly different. In European roulette, the betting area is a bit more organized, and in some casinos, dealers (also called croupiers) place bets for you.

In American roulette, players place their own bets directly, and the table is designed for a faster-paced game. If you like a more relaxed experience, European roulette might be more enjoyable.

Special Rules: “En Prison” Helps Players

One of the best things about European roulette is the “En Prison” rule. Here’s how it works:

  • If you make an even-money bet (like betting on red or black) and the ball lands on zero, you don’t lose immediately.
  • Instead, your bet is “imprisoned” for the next spin.
  • If you win on the next spin, you get your money back!

This rule makes European roulette even more player-friendly. American roulette does not offer this rule, making it harder to win in the long run.

Which Roulette Game Should You Play?

If you want better odds, a lower house edge, and a fairer chance of winning, go for European roulette. The single zero and extra rules make it a smarter choice. However, if you enjoy fast-paced games and more risk, you might like American roulette. Some players prefer the extra excitement of the double zero.

Final Thoughts

Both European and American roulette are fun and thrilling, but the differences between them can affect your chances of winning. If you’re looking to stretch your money and play smarter, European roulette is the better choice. But if you love fast action and don’t mind a bigger challenge, American roulette can be just as exciting.

So next time you’re at the casino or playing online, take a closer look at the wheel—because that extra zero makes all the difference!
