Teaching children how to be safe online

In today’s digital age, children often spend as much time online as they do outside, using the internet for homework, socialising, learning and so much more. The internet can be an incredible resource, offering information at the touch of a button and creativity and learning available by the bucketload.

With these opportunities does come risks. Some that you’re not always able to see.

Protecting your child from harmful experiences doesn’t just mean monitoring their activity but equipping them with the right knowledge to navigate the digital world safely.

Talk about online activities
One of the first steps in ensuring your child’s safety online is understanding what they do when they’re connected. Instead of simply setting rules and hoping for the best, take the time to talk to them about their habits. Does your child play games with others? Are they active on social media? What websites do they visit? By showing an interest in their activity, you not only stay informed but also help them feel comfortable coming to you if they experience any issues.

Be specific about the risks in social spaces, so they understand that chatting with strangers or sharing personal information has its consequences. Encouraging them to have an open dialogue with you will empower them to make safer choices when they’re using the internet.

Educate, educate, educate
The more children understand about the potential risks, the better they can protect themselves. Start by educating them about common online dangers, such as cyberbullying, inappropriate content, and sextortion scams. Emphasise that they should always tell an adult if they feel uncomfortable or threatened online – even if that isn’t you but rather a teacher or family friend.

When they’re browsing, they may occasionally come across inappropriate websites. Sometimes they pop up unexpectedly. Many children are curious, and they may not understand the risks associated with clicking on random links. Have an open conversation with them, letting them know how to avoid these traps and spot the signs of what is unacceptable to watch or explore.

Finding safe places for kids to explore is a big part of digital parenting. Many people use curated lists to find sites that are already checked for quality and safety. Parental controls aren’t foolproof though. They’re most effective when combined with ongoing conversations and education about online safety.

Take the time to customise the settings on your child’s devices and apps. There are various tools available that can help you filter out age-inappropriate content, such as YouTube’s restricted mode or family-friendly settings on gaming consoles. By actively managing these controls, you create a safer environment while also building trust with your child.
