Cowboy Boots Different Materials

Cowboy Boots Different Materials and How To Care For Each Type

Posted on December 17, 2024 By Becky

Care and upkeep are vital to the longevity of any item of clothing,

It could be a pair of linen trousers. Or it could be a vintage ball gown. In this instance, the focus is going to be on how to care for cowboy shoes and boots.

OK, so not everyone has a pair of these in their closet, as they are an acquired taste. As these shoes are set to come back into popularity in 2025, chances are that the average person may find themselves at least thinking about getting a pair, so you will need to know how to best maintain these unique and snazzy shoes.

This is a simplified guide as to the different materials that these boots are usually made from and some tips on how to care for each.

Leather

Starting with the most popular material that cowboy boots are made from, leather (either cowhide or calfskin) is a durable and versatile option.

Luckily, this is one of the simplest materials to care for in the cowboy clothing range, and all you will need to do is wipe off dirt with a damp cloth, or a soft brush, so you don’t scratch the leather.

Apply a leather conditioner to keep the material supple and then use a wax polish or cream. This will protect the surface of the leather and will prevent cracks from forming. Be sure to invest in a boot tree, as this will stop the leather from warping.

Cowboy Boots Different Materials

Exotic Leather

OK, so you may have heard the rumor that some cowboy footwear is made from alligator or snake. It’s true, as these textures and patterns help the boots to stand out.

You will need to clean this type of surface differently. For snakeskin boots, you should clean along the grain, as this will prevent the scales from breaking off or being lifted. You will also need to ensure you have an exotic leather conditioner to hand, as this will help the boots to stay flexible and maintain their texture.

When you are polishing the specialized leather shoes, you should take care not to apply too much moisture, as this can cause the scales and the patterns to become damaged.

You may even find that you become the owner of a pair of cowboy boots made from quill ostrich. The care tips are the same as they would be for the exotic leathers; just be extra careful when applying the polish, and do so in small, circular motions, so as not to cause scratching.

Cowboy Boots Different Materials

Suede

Suede is another popular material for cowboy clothing and, as such, the soft, luxurious finish is also coveted in the boots. Interestingly, even though most general shoes are considered luxurious if they are made of suede, when it comes to cowboy boots, a suede pair is seen as more casual.

You will need to get a suede brush to remove dirt and stains and a suede protector, which will protect the material from debris and rainwater. If you want these boots to last, don’t wear them out in the rain if you can, and blot them if they get wet as soon as possible.
