Feeling Overweight? Exploring Fitness, Nutrition, and Cosmetic Procedures

Posted on November 4, 2024 By Becky

Feeling unhappy in your body, especially when struggling with weight, can feel overwhelming and isolating. Society throws a lot of expectations at us, and it’s easy to feel shame or frustration when you don’t meet them. Aside from the shame, there are health risks associated with being overweight. But here’s the thing: you can change all of that.

There are many ways to regain control of your health and size, including fitness, nutrition, and, yes, even cosmetic procedures. We discuss the most effective ones below.

Cosmetic Procedures: Fast-Track to a Better You

If you’re not willing to wait for months to gradually shed fat through exercise and dieting, surgery can be the ideal tool to jumpstart your journey. Here are some procedures to consider:

  • Liposuction: This targets stubborn areas of fat that don’t seem to budge, even with exercise. Think of it as a contouring tool—perfect for those trouble spots that diet and fitness miss. It’s a safe, minimally invasive option that offers almost immediate results. If your main struggle lies in specific areas like the abdomen, thighs, or arms, liposuction could be the boost you need to feel more at ease in your clothes.
  • Bariatric surgery: For those dealing with more significant weight challenges, gastric sleeve surgery can be the perfect solution. This is a type of bariatric surgery that reduces the size of your stomach, limiting the amount of food you can eat and making it easier to lose weight. It’s often recommended for individuals who need to shed a large amount of weight to improve their health, and it provides a structured, sustainable path forward.

Shedding a considerable amount of weight within a short time can leave you with loose, sagging skin. At this point, you may consider body lifts (including lower body lifts and arm lifts) surgery to remove the sagging skin and tissue to provide a smoother, more toned look.

Surgical options might feel like a big decision, but they offer fast and noticeable results that can motivate you to stay on track. Consult a medical professional to discuss whether surgery could be the right fit for you.

Start Fitness Training and Stick to It

Surgery can kickstart your weight loss journey, but it works best when paired with a consistent fitness routine. Now, I know what you’re thinking—going to the gym or working out can feel intimidating, But here’s a little secret: strength training is key to dropping pounds and maintaining weight loss.

You don’t need to lift heavy weights right away; even using your body weight for exercises like squats, lunges, and push-ups can make a significant difference.

Consider incorporating resistance bands or light dumbbells into your routine to increase the challenge gradually. Aim for short, focused sessions a few times a week, and as you progress, you’ll find yourself feeling stronger and more energized. Strength training is not just about physical changes—it’s about empowering yourself, setting and achieving goals, and feeling capable in your own body.

If traditional gyms aren’t your thing, there are plenty of options available. Many online platforms offer strength training classes so you can work out from the comfort of your home. Alternatively, you could explore local group classes, which can make the experience more fun and motivating.

Nutrition: Cut the Carbs and Junk

While fitness and surgery can make a difference, dieting is the foundation for lasting change. But I want you to hear this: You don’t need to aim for perfection or eliminate all the foods you love. Small, sustainable changes are what count.

If weight loss is your goal, the key lies in cutting back on carbs and processed foods. Things like sugary snacks, soda, white bread, and fast food can sneak in extra calories without offering much nutrition. You don’t need to starve yourself—just focus on swapping out unhealthy options with better ones.

  • Low-carb eating plans like the keto diet can be effective if you’re trying to drop pounds quickly, according to research. These diets reduce your intake of carbs, encouraging your body to burn fat for energy.
  • Prioritize protein and fiber—foods like lean meat, fish, eggs, leafy greens, and fruits will keep you full longer and reduce cravings.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking water throughout the day. Sometimes, hunger is thirst in disguise.

The Bottom Line

Don’t let shame hold you back. If surgery feels right for you, or if hitting the gym is more your speed, just know that these choices are valid and worth pursuing. You deserve to feel good in your body. You deserve to enjoy life without being held back by discomfort, self-doubt, or health risks. Start today—whether that’s booking a consultation, taking a walk, or swapping out one unhealthy meal. You’ve got this.
