What to Expect on Your First Cruise

Posted on September 30, 2024 By Becky

A cruise is an enormously popular way to spend a holiday. But if you’re thinking of booking a spot on a cruise ship for the first time, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or uncertain. Let’s take a look at some of the more important facets of the experience, and look at what first-time cruisers might expect.

Choosing the Right Cruise for Your First Trip

To begin with, it’s important to note that cruise holidays come in many different varieties. In some cases, you’ll be booking a stay on what amounts to a floating hotel, and most of the appeal of the trip will stem from the ship itself. In other cases, you’ll be ferried from port to port, and be given plenty of time to explore. You can think of this as a kind of mix of many different coastal adventures, bound together by the cruise ship.

Mediterranean cruises tend to offer a great balance of resorts, with beach relaxation, history and culture all on offer. It’s worth looking at the kind of tourist being catered to. If you’re looking for something that will appeal to children, then you’ll find many trips marketed as such. The length of the trip also matters – if you’re unsure of whether you’re going to enjoy your cruise, then looking for a shorter trip might be a good idea.

What to Pack for a Cruise

What you pack will tend to depend on the kind of cruise you’re going on. In general, it’s a good idea to be ready for a variety of climates and activities. Make sure that you’re going to be comfortable, above all, and that you have swimwear available. This applies especially if the ship comes with pool facilities.

There might be some occasions during your trip when you’ll be sitting down for a formal meal. This will mean dressing up in formal wear. For the most part, however, you should treat it like any other resort-based holiday. Lightweight clothing, sun protection, and sunglasses are essential.

Making the Most of Port Days

Most cruises will allow you to disembark every so often to check out what’s on offer at a given port. In some cases, this will mean packing particular items. If you want to go on a long tour of an ancient city, for example, then a pair of rugged walking boots might be essential. Generally speaking, shore excursions are best when they’re pre-planned. Make sure that you get the most from all of your time ashore, but leave a little bit of room for spontaneity – and don’t pack your itinerary so tight that you stress about getting back to the ship.

What to Expect on Sea Days

During sea days, you won’t be stopping off anywhere. That means that all of the entertainment will come from the amenities on the ship. For adults, this might mean spa treatments, sunloungers, and special workshops and classes. For kids, it might mean a supervised indoor play area.

The balance of sea days and port days you experience will depend on where you’re cruising, and who you’re cruising with. Research the provider in advance to avoid disappointment!
