Five weekend activities to enjoy in the autumn…that don’t involve the pub! Posted on September 30, 2024 By Becky The autumn time is a special time of year. It’s one where colour really plays a part in its beauty, while the nights draw in and the cooler weather arrives, it creates a real cosy atmosphere. It’s why it’s many people’s favourite season. For many, it’s the time of year when a trip to the pub is a go-to on a Friday night or Sunday afternoon, sitting by the fire enjoying a glass of wine or pint of Guinness. However, that’s not for everyone, especially those that have given up the booze or have gone through one of the many private alcohol rehabs UK wide. But do not fear, there are many other enriching activities that are perfect for the autumn and will give you that warm feeling inside. So, as autumn arrives, here are five weekend activities you can enjoy…that don’t involve the pub! Explore Nature on an Autumn Walk It’s the time of year perfect for a walk. It’s not too hot, not too cold and you can watch the natural world change, with the reds, oranges and browns of the leaves transforming the countryside and woodlands. There’s a real sense of peace you get with the season and a walk to unwind and reconnect with nature can be so good for the mind and soul. There are many spots across the UK perfect for a walk, whether it be a trip out to the likes of the Peak District or Yorkshire Dales, or simply to your local park. There’s so much out there to explore and enjoy a walk. Visit a Local Farmers’ Market Produce begins to change as we enter the new season and visiting a local farmers’ market you’ll find the likes of apples, pears, root vegetables, squashes and, of course, pumpkins widely available. A morning stroll enjoying the fresh produce, homemade jams, artisanal breads and other seasonal treats is a great way to start the day, as well as supporting local growers and makers. It’s the ideal chance to pick up some ingredients and then spend your afternoon making something hearty. Farmers’ markets can also be a great place to find handcrafted gifts and seasonal decorations, such as autumn wreaths or local crafts, adding a unique and personal touch to your home. Go for a Bike Ride Cycling is another fantastic way to enjoy the great outdoors, particularly in the cooler autumn months when the air is crisp but not too cold. Many cycling paths across the UK offer scenic routes that are especially beautiful during autumn. The Camel Trail in Cornwall, Bristol to Bath Railway Path, and Forest of Dean Family Cycle Trail are just a few examples of paths that are perfect for a weekend ride. Whether you’re an experienced cyclist or a casual rider, getting on your bike is a great way to explore new areas, get some exercise, and soak in the autumn scenery. If you don’t own a bike, many cities and tourist areas have bike rental services, making it easy to enjoy a cycling adventure for the day. Try Your Hand at Autumnal Arts and Crafts Autumn is a time of creativity, with its rich colours and festive spirit providing plenty of inspiration for arts and crafts. Spending a weekend afternoon making your own autumn decorations, wreaths, or artwork can be a fun and fulfilling way to embrace the season. For those who enjoy a hands-on activity, making an autumn wreath using twigs, pine cones, leaves, and berries found on a walk is a wonderful way to bring the outdoors inside. If you’re more into painting or drawing, capturing the beauty of the autumn landscape or experimenting with watercolours can be a relaxing and rewarding way to spend your time. For families, autumn crafts are also a great activity for children. Pumpkin carving, leaf pressing, or making paper lanterns for Halloween are just a few ways to spark creativity and have fun without relying on screens or heading out to the pub. Host a Movie Marathon or Game Night As the nights draw in and the weather turns cooler, there’s nothing quite like a cosy evening indoors. Hosting a movie marathon or a game night with friends or family can be the perfect way to enjoy each other’s company without the need to head to the pub. Pick a theme for your movie night – perhaps classic autumn films, Halloween favourites, or a marathon of feel-good comedies. Make it extra special by preparing some homemade snacks, hot chocolate, or a seasonal apple cider. For a more interactive evening, a game night is a great way to bring people together. Whether it’s a classic board game like Monopoly or a strategy game like Settlers of Catan, gathering around the table with a bit of friendly competition creates a fun, relaxed atmosphere.
