The Top Tips To Help You Cope When You Received a Cancer Diagnosis In Australia

Posted on August 7, 2024December 13, 2024 By Becky

Anyone who has received bad news before here in Australia will tell you that a cancer diagnosis is an incredibly stressful thing to deal with. It really does turn your life on its head and there is never really any way to prepare yourself for it. You will start to feel totally overwhelmed then you will feel fear and then anger and all at the same time. This is a normal part of such an experience but it is crucial that you know there is help out there in your time of need. It can be hard moving away from all of your negative thinking and it can really affect how you make decisions moving forward.

It affects you both physically and mentally and this is why it is so incredibly important that you have the option to turn to cancer support services that will help you get to the end of this and hopefully with a successful conclusion. Talking to the people that offer the services will provide you with a great deal of support and the following are just some other top tips to help you cope when you receive a cancer diagnosis.

  • Be true to your feelings – As was touched on before, it is normal to have fear and to start getting depressed when you receive such a diagnosis. Don’t always feel that you have to put on a brave face for your family and try to tell them exactly how you’re feeling and maybe they can help. This is when it is incredibly important to take advantage of the support services that are currently in place so you can talk about how you’re feeling at that time.
  • Surround yourself with a support group – You’re going to need hands-on support and you’re going to need emotional support as well. Talk to your friends and family about setting up schedules so someone can take you to the hospital and back home again. If you have any pets, then someone is going to need to take care of them as well. The important thing to remember is that if you don’t have any close family members for a shoulder to lean upon then you can always turn to the support services offered.
  • Find a new hobby – It is important that you have something to distract you from what you’re going through at this very moment and so try to find a new hobby or get back doing something that you loved to do in the past and definitely did put a smile on your face. Pick something that helps to calm you down and takes your thoughts away from the health issues that you are currently experiencing.

The important thing however is to try to take each day as it comes and that there are a number of important decisions, such as any surgery or researching breast cancer reconstruction surgeons, that you need to make with regard to your treatment. There is no need to think about the future right now, just concentrate on today.
