Controlling Habits And How they can Create Toxicity

Posted on July 13, 2024 By Becky

So, like, we’re all about good intentions here, but let’s be real – for us control enthusiasts, feeling like we’re the boss gives us major reassurance.  Keeping your controlling ways under control is completely possible for you, right? You need to be aware of how your tendencies can start messing with peace, harmony, and family ties. We all have our peculiarities, but when we take it too far and become out of control, control freaks, things can get pretty toxic real quick. So, let’s dive into how our need to control can mess things up and how we can turn it around for more chill and serene family dynamics.

Getting Real about Controlling Behavior

It becomes apparent that most people don’t even realize they can be controlling, not recognizing one’s own behavior. Then, let us point to the elephant in the room. Controlling behaviors is when we just can’t resist sticking our nose where it doesn’t belong and trying to run the show for everyone else. Maybe it comes from a place of wanting order or feeling scared of things getting out of hand. But when we go overboard, it can lead to major drama and bad vibes in the family, causing uncomfortable silences, ignored phone calls and messages, and empty dinner tables.

The Drama it Brings

The truth is when you’re trying to control every little thing—what people do, think, and feel you make them feel more and more out of control and desperate. You are just creating A big ol’ mess of tension, power struggles, and emotional rollercoasters within the fam. Suddenly, conflicts are popping up like popcorn, and no one is feeling the love any more. Family members might also start acting out in destructive ways. Some of the negative effects your controlling behavior can have on other members of the family is that they may have a lack of motivation and self-interest and blindly become people pleasers to avoid conflict in other situations.

How to Spot Your Controlling Side

Time for some introspection. Take a moment to gaze at yourself in the mirror and ponder: Are you maybe being a tad overly critical, not giving others enough room to express themselves, or perhaps hovering a bit too closely over their shoulders? Spotting these habits is the key to shaking things up and changing the game. Remember, it’s totally okay to have moments of control, but being aware of when those moments arise can make all the difference in how you connect with those around you. So, embrace that self-awareness and take the first step to embrace a more balanced and respectful approach in your interactions.

Tips for Turning Things Around

You are ready for this; it’s time to turn it around. These are some ways to take the necessary steps in the right direction for balance and harmony, among many good things to return to your family dynamics:

Soul Searchin’: Dive deep into those feelings and figure out what’s really driving your need for control. Are past experiences or fears calling the shots? Understanding the why can help you make real changes.

Let’s Talk, Fam: Open those lines of communication wide. Listen up, show empathy, and keep an open mind. Respect each other’s boundaries and viewpoints. It’s all about understanding and having each other’s backs.

Empower Squad: Time to boost those family members up! Let them spread their wings, make decisions, and chase their dreams without you always butting in. Everyone’s got their own vibe, so simply celebrate and openly encourage it.

Get Some Help: If your controlling ways are rooted in deeper stuff like anxiety or insecurities, it’s cool to seek some pro guidance. Sometimes, seeking outside help can provide fresh perspectives and valuable tools. Whether it’s family therapy, parenting classes, or joining an addiction program tailored to address controlling behaviors, taking that extra step shows your commitment to growth and improvement.

Creating a Zen Family Space

Bringing that chill and peaceful energy back into the family nest takes work, but it’s so worth it. By ditching the control freak vibes and embracing respect, understanding, and autonomy, you can build a tight-knit unit that thrives on love and support.

In a nutshell, being a control freak only leads to drama and chaos within the family. It is possible to smartly navigate your control freak nature, and by recognizing and addressing these bad vibes with empathy, self-reflection, and open convo, you can transform your family dynamic into a chill, loving, and harmonious vibe. Remember, we’re all in this together. Embrace the change, and watch your family bloom into a peaceful and happy crew.
