Installing a Wall-Mount Sink: Step-by-Step

Posted on July 5, 2024 By Becky

Wall-mount sinks are a fantastic option for bathrooms. They are especially good for smaller ones. This is because they save floor space and also a modern and streamlined look to the space. Do you think that installing a wall-mount sink is a daunting task? Not really! I am sure that if you have the right tools and a step-by-step guide then you can easily achieve a professional-looking installation on your own.

This comprehensive guide will guide you through the entire process. I am going to explain from preparation to final touches!

Why Choose a Wall-Mounted Sink?

It is worthy to know that why a wall-mount sink might be the right choice for your bathroom before I jump directly into the installation process:

  1. Wall-mount sinks free up floor space.
  2. They give a minimalist look that will complement any contemporary bathroom designs.
  3. The cleaning of the bathroom floor becomes much easier.
  4. You can install the sink at a height that will suit your needs.

In order to buy a modern yet contemporary wall mounted sink you must check out the Online store of the Royal Bathrooms. They have some amazing options available in all styles, designs colours and shapes.

Tools and Materials You Will Need

Get your hands on all the necessary tools and materials:

  • Wall-mount sink
  • Mounting bracket (usually included with the sink)
  • Level
  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Drill with masonry bit (if drilling into tile or concrete)
  • Stud finder
  • Wrenches
  • Screwdriver
  • Pipe wrench or adjustable wrench
  • Plumber’s tape (Teflon tape)
  • Silicone caulk
  • Bolts and screws (typically included with the sink)
  • Pipe fittings and traps
  • Safety glasses and gloves

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Step 1: Get the Area Ready

  1. Turn Off Water Supply

You should turn off the water supply to the sink before you start. This can usually be done via shut-off valves under the existing sink. Or you can also do this by turning off the main water supply.

  2. Remove Existing Fixtures

Are you replacing an old sink? First of all, carefully remove it! You should disconnect the water supply lines and the drain pipe. You must also remove any mounting hardware. This is a good option under sink cabinet to replace the old sink.

  3. Examine the Wall

You should also check the condition of the wall. You need to specially check the place where the sink will be mounted. That wall needs to be strong enough to support the weight of the sink. You can also add extra support behind the wall.

Step 2: Measure and Mark

  1. Measure the Height

You must decide the height at which you want to mount the sink. A standard height is usually about 32-36 inches from the floor. But you can also adjust this according to your own preference.

  2. Mark the Bracket Placement

You should use a level in order to mark a horizontal line at the desired height. You can position the mounting bracket on the line. You should mark the locations for the mounting holes.

  3. Locate the Studs

You can use a stud finder to locate the wall studs. You can also align the mounting holes with the studs if possible! This will give you maximum support. You will need to use appropriate wall anchors if the previous option is not possible.

Step 3: Drill and Install the Bracket

  1. Drill the Holes

You must use a drill with the appropriate bit. You should drill holes at the marked locations. You must use a masonry bit if you are drilling into a tile. You should also proceed slowly to avoid cracking the tiles.

  2. Insert Anchors

You must insert wall anchors into the drilled holes if you are not drilling into the studs.

  3. Attach the Bracket

You should position the mounting bracket over the holes. Afterwards you need to secure it to the wall using bolts or screws. You must ensure that the bracket is level and firmly attached.

Step 4: Install the Sink

  1. Prepare the Sink

Does your sink has a built-in faucet? You must install it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Otherwise, you should prepare the sink for installation by attaching any necessary hardware.

  2. Mount the SinkNow, you should carefully lift the sink and position it onto the mounting bracket. You must ensure if it is securely seated and level.
  3. Secure the Sink

This depends on the design of your sink. You will need to secure it to the wall using additional screws or bolts, and you can make an inspired design bathroom if you must follow the manufacturer’s instructions for this step.

Step 5: Connect the Plumbing

  1. Attach the Water Supply Lines

In this step you should connect the hot and cold water supply lines to the faucet. You can use plumber’s tape on the threads. This will ensure a watertight seal. You can also tighten the connections with a wrench. You just need to be careful not to overtighten.

  2. Install the Drain Assembly

You should connect the drainpipe to the sink’s drain outlet. You must make sure that all connections are tight. For this purpose you will need to use plumber’s tape where necessary in order to prevent leaks.

  3. Connect the P-Trap

You must attach the P-trap to the drainpipe and connect it to the wall drain. Again, you must ensure that all the connections are secure and leak-free.

Step 6: Seal and Test

  1. Apply Silicone Caulk

Now you need to apply a bead of silicone caulk around the edges of the sink because this is the spot where it meets the wall. This will ensure a watertight seal. Moreover, it will also prevent water from seeping behind the sink.

  2. Turn On the Water Supply

You should slowly turn on the water supply and check for any leaks. You can tighten any connections if necessary.

  3. Test the Sink
Now you should run both hot and cold water in order to ensure that the faucet is working correctly. You must check the drain for any leaks.

The following information will answer all your queries:

1. Can I install a wall-mount sink on any wall?

A standard height is 32-36 inches from the floor. But you can adjust this based on your personal preference and comfort.
