Your Driving Test – Key Dos and Don’ts

Getting your driving license is at once one of the most freeing things you can do in adult life, and one of the most stressful. The test is difficult and even gruelling for some, with the pass rate currently sitting below 50%. Being nervous about your upcoming driving test is a good thing, but shouldn’t define your final weeks of getting to grips with driving.

There are many things to consider on the run up to, and during your test – but there are some essential dos and don’ts you can keep in mind to improve your chances. What are they, and what can you expect from your upcoming driving test?

What Happens During a Driving Test?

Acquiring a driving license is a multifarious endeavour, requiring you to complete two distinct tests in order to qualify. The first is a theory test, taken as a multiple-choice exam. This must be taken first, before you can take the second test – the practical driving test. The practical test is our subject here, being the most important and involved part of the license acquisition journey.

The practical test has five key components to it, the first two of which are: an eyesight check; and a ‘show me, tell me’ section wherein the instructor asks you to identify or demonstrate aspects of the vehicle. These are undertaken before you start driving. The final three constitute the driving aspect of the test, and include tests of your general ability, a testing of your reversing capability, and a test of your independent driving skill.

The Dos

The first ‘do’ concerns your approach to the test before the day itself: do get as much practical experience behind the wheel as possible. You want to be as comfortable with your driving as you possibly can be going into the test, and there is only so much gainful preparation you will get from going over the theory. Here, learner insurance can be an invaluable purchase; it gives you the opportunity to drive ahead of your test, with supervision from a licensed driver in the passenger seat.

On the day itself, you should ensure you arrive both on time and with the correct documents in-hand. Arriving late or arriving without the right documents could see you completely forfeit your test window, leaving you in the lurch until your next test is booked.

The Don’ts

Perhaps the most important ‘don’t’ you should keep in mind is this: don’t panic. This is far easier said than done, but is essential to your presence of mind behind the wheel and your response to certain situations or stimuli. Staying cool and collected allows you to make decisions confidently, and minimises the likelihood of stalls and other such minor faults.

Finally, don’t shy away from driving in different conditions. New drivers often refrain from driving in wet conditions, owing to increased difficulties presented by road condition and visibility. The more comfortable you are with these conditions, the less likely you are to get slipped up if your test takes place on a rainy day!
