Essentials Every Home Should Have

Want to create an organised home, and ensure you have everything you need- when you need them? Here are a few simple essentials that every home should have, but are easily forgotten about. 

A sewing kit

We live in a very ‘throw away’ society, and it shouldn’t be the case. Sometimes a simple mending job on a piece of clothing can extend its life for many more months, it can help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and saves you money too. Get yourself a simple sewing kit with a needle and thread and some spare buttons. Whether it’s taking up trousers that are too long, replacing missing buttons or re-stitching seams, it’s well worth doing and making that simple repair rather than just throwing it in the bin and rebuying it. 

A first aid kit

Since most accidents happen in the home, it makes sense to be prepared against minor issues. Cuts and scrapes, burns, illnesses such as colds and flus. Have some plasters, bandages, paracetamol and constipation tablets stored away for when you need them. The trouble about waiting until you have an injury or get ill is that getting to the shop is a bit of a hassle. It’s much better to have them at home and ready for when you need them. 

Fire extinguishers

This is something that every home should have, but most don’t. No one wants to think about worst case scenarios, but in the event of a fire an extinguisher can have it put out quickly and efficiently. One in the kitchen and another somewhere upstairs should do the trick, make sure you know how to use them and which extinguishers can be used on which kind of fire. For example, if you have a water extinguisher you wouldn’t use that on an electrical fire. 

Emergency candles

Sometimes power cuts happen, having candles somewhere in the house that you can light will mean you’re not waiting around in the dark. It’s just one of those things that you only really need to think about once, pop a pack in a drawer with matches or a lighter and they’re there if you ever need them. 

A well stocked store cupboard

There are lots of benefits to having a well stocked store cupboard at home. Not only can it save you money as you’re not always having to run out and buy fresh ingredients, but if you get bad weather and can’t get to the shop- or even run out of money completely, you know you’ll still be able to eat. Pasta, rice and grains, tins of vegetables and fish, jars of sauces and herbs and spices will all come in useful. You don’t need to go mad and stock up like the apocalypse is impending, but a few essentials to last you a number of weeks is never a bad thing.
