The First Day (Take Two!)

003

On Monday we chartered familiar, yet also unfamiliar territory, for it was Sasha’s first day at preschool, joining her elder brother.

When it was Freddie’s first day 15 months ago, I felt a bundle of nerves (although trying not to show these!) and it was a BIG DEAL him going- he suddenly seemed so grown up and I wasn’t used to not having him around. It took us all a little while to adjust, and was a big parenting milestone. This time around, I’ve felt slightly guilty that it hasn’t really played on my mind too much that my little girl will also be going to preschool, and that I haven’t worried at all about leaving her, even though I did with Freddie. Whilst I knew he was ready for new adventures, it did fill me with some angst leaving my first born with people other than family. It doesn’t mean I don’t care or worry about my baby girl though- I guess the preschool is now so familiar to all of us, the staff, the routines, we all just instantly feel more comfortable. She has the HUGE confidence booster of her brother going with her, or being there already when she arrives (which was much needed on the third day this week, when she was a little clingier leaving me. As soon as she saw F sitting for a story on the carpet, she let go of me, and happily trotted on over to her brother).

I am so proud of how Sasha has coped with this new transition this week- no tears as you might expect, and big smiles on collection, before a stream of chatter about what she got up to in my absence. I am equally proud of her brother, who has really looked after her each session and introduced her to all of his friends, although according to preschool the novelty of having little sis hanging around when there are ‘train routes’ to be travelled and ‘castles’ to be climbed with pals, could be wearing off just a tiny bit… 🙂

I’m confident that she’ll soon find her own path, and her own friends and interests there, as well as the shared ones with her big brother.

…and I’m also secretly hoping that preschool means there will slightly fewer requests for painting, as opposed to the current daily ones (see above pic)! 😉

haha! The photo above is why I am rubbish and tend to avoid letting the boys paint.
I’m glad she got on well at preschool. I felt the same about Harry going, I felt a bit emotional but it wasn’t as massive as when Charles went. I think when you know the staff and the day to day routine is easy to settle and possible concerns or worries.
Well done to Freddie for being so kind to her too, that’s really sweet xx

Thanks lovely, I’ve been really proud of both of them 🙂 Good to know I’m not alone when it comes to being more laid back second time around! x

Oh my goodness, look at her wee face! She’s fully loving that paint being everywhere! 🙂 I totally know what you mean about being less nervous about the second child Becks. I was distraught when Eva and Annie started school, but poor wee Noah was just bundled out of the car and sent on his way 🙂 I think you always feel a bit better knowing they have someone older to keep an eye on them too. I bet Freddie is loving showing Sasha the ropes!Xxx

Haha, poor Noah! 😉 I’ve been a lot quicker depositing S at preschool where as with Freddie I would hang about for ages, which probably didn’t help him settle! Freddie is indeed showing S the ropes, she’s currently one of the boys and joining in with all of their games! x

So pleased she’s doing so well bless her, it’s good that you’re feeling positive about it too, I’m sure that’s helped her a lot!
So lovely that Freddie has been such a good big brother making sure she’s okay, that’s so so cute! X

I think it has helped her a lot. When Freddie started, the poor thing must have been wondering why I was leaving him at this place, yet taking S with me, I don’t think that helped him settle at all! 🙁 x

Before I know it Little Man will be following in his sister’s footsteps and going off to preschool too! It seems like such a distant thing and yet I know it will come quickly. It sounds like Sasha is doing fantastically! Long may it continue x

Thanks Donna! I can’t believe she is now at preschool too- I remember saying this time last year that she had another year to go, and now here it is! Crazy stuff, they’ll be 18 before we know it! x

Oh I love that picture – it’s rather similar to life around here!! And yay for Sasha enjoying pre-school. I remember being worried about Elma starting nursery because Kitty had found it so hard to settle but she went in without a backward glance; something about the familiarity and the wanting to keep up with her sister I suspect!

Ditto here Carie, I’m sure having F there and wanting to keep up with him has been a good thing when it comes to helping her settle in- long may it continue! x

Aw bless her, she sounds like she is doing amazingly. Mads didn’t go to nursery until she was nearly 3 as when I went back to work after my mat leave with her she went to a family friend. I was so worried and nervous about her, and really nervous, but LL went at 11 months and I was even worse. 😉 But now they both absolutely love it and I am so proud of them! x

Aaah as you should be! I think I would have been more nervous with S if she’d started younger, I guess i’m just glad and lucky that they’ve been able to be with me for so long- I would have been a wreck leaving them as babies as I know many, many people have to do x

It sure does- and I think the fact that they were familiar to S through dropping off and picking up Freddie has really helped too 🙂

Yay, well done Sasha. How lovely that she has transitioned so easily. I’m sure she will forge her own path soon. Just takes a little bit of time, our 5 year old didn’t know anyone’s name at school for the first 3 months haha they just played…. children are so adaptable. I bet F likes being able to look out for her too. This is a lovely ‘Ordinary Moments’ post xxx
