Sandcastle Craft Activity

sandcastle craft 042

This craft comes as I’m desperately trying to eek-out the last few weeks of summer (where have you gone?), and feeling inspired after looking forward to our trip to Broadstairs last Friday. A playgroup we attend had a similar sandcastle craft set up the other week, so I thought I’d adapt it to try at home. Anything to imagine that we might once more be able to let the kids run around the garden in the buff, and enjoy evenings sat outside in the warmth- It is COLD now!

This is a great craft for older children/ preschoolers to practice their cutting with scissors, and for younger ones to enjoy the colouring and become acquainted with a pritt-stick (a lot less messy than the usual PVA glue!).

Sandcastle Craft Activity – You will need:

  • Blue card
  • Yellow sugar paper
  • A black felt tip pen
  • Scissors
  • Pictures of shells to print off, cut out and colour
  • Lolly sticks
  • A piece of coloured felt
  • Pritt Stick
  • Crayons

Instructions:

1. Print off pictures of shells that your child can either cut out themselves, or you can cut them out for them. I just Googled ‘pictures of shells to colour in’, and a few different sites popped up. I then copied and pasted the pictures onto a Word document, before printing off. Make sure whichever site you use gives permission for you to copy their images!

2. Draw a sandcastle on your yellow sugar paper with a black pen, and cut it out.

3. Get your child to stick the sandcastle onto the blue card using the Pritt Stick.

4. They can then colour their shells (always the best part!)

5. Your little one can then arrange and glue the shells onto their sandcastle.

6. The lolly stick can then be glued onto the top of the sandcastle.

7. On the coloured felt, you or your child can draw a triangle shape (for the flag), cut it out, and then glue it onto your lolly stick.

8. Et Voila- the finished sandcastle!

Freddie and Sasha really enjoyed this, as there was a lot for them to ‘have a go’ at, all in one craft- colouring, cutting, designing and sticking, plus use of different textures:

The Fredster went a bit unorthodox and decided he wanted 2 flags on his sandcastle- and why the hell not?!
