As per most of the country, Sunday was basking in glorious sunshine. We decided to sack off the start of potty training Sasha (what were we thinking?), as every last bit of us was screaming “Get thee to a train!”, what with all the atrocious weather of late, and get a train we did. London Bridge is our nearest station, from our home in zone 5, and in no time at all we are standing in the shadow of The Shard.

Where as often we head west along The Southbank, we are equally likely to go East, through Hays Galleria and along the river, taking in HMS Belfast, the Tower of London, City Hall and of course, Tower Bridge. I love this area, as whilst busy, it isn’t as packed as The Southbank. The children have plenty of room to roam around, without getting under everyone’s feet/mown down by enthusiastic weekend joggers. We spent ages watching the shooting fountains by City Hall (I can’t WAIT until summer, when all the children strip off into bathing suits and run about in them- mine will be in their element!), and playing on the steps of the outdoor amphitheatre.

What I also love about this particular stretch of river is the breathtaking architecture, where so many styles and eras collide. I’m always amazed at the size of the new ‘Walkie Talkie’ building, and The Gerkin, and can’t believe that we can see them so clearly from our bedroom window, despite being several miles away.

After a while we headed for lunch, stopping at an old favourite of ours, The Horniman at Hays, but had to de-camp to Cafe Rouge in Hays Galleria, after failing to locate a second high chair/booster for Freddie, which was a shame as we had an outdoor table overlooking the river (what large family-friendly pub has only two highchairs? First world problems, no?!). After a top-notch lunch (me- Boeuf Bourguignon, him – fish cakes, them – pasta), we went in search of ice creams on the top of London Bridge, before catching the train home.

As you can see from the photos, someone flaked hard post ’99er (geddit?!).

Hope you had equally sunny weekends- let hope this is the real start of spring!
