Making your house a home: Some of the ways to do it

A home is the one thing that so many of us strive towards owning one day. It is the biggest and most expensive thing you will possibly own, which is why it can be a dream and ambition for so many to achieve at some stage in their lives. We are in the process of buying and selling at the moment so really do know what a big deal it is! Buying the house or property is one thing, but once you have the keys making it your home could become a big mission that you try and complete.

You want to be able to walk through the door and feel at ease with your home. It is your place to be yourself, to relax and unwind, but it is also an extension of who you are. After all it has all of your things in it! So here are some of the ways that you can make your house a home.

Seek inspiration online

One of the first things you might want to do is seek some inspiration online. It can be hard to know the type of things you want in your home, or even the way that you want to decorate it. So it could be worth looking online on some of my favourite platforms like Instagram and Pinterest. These platforms are full of inspiration and images, and even some of the pinterest posts will have direct links to tutorials and guides. Which could help you create some of the looks.

Add quirky features with furniture

Your home is going to need furniture, in some of the rooms there will be furniture items that are functional and what is needed. The living room, for example, will need options of things for you to sit on. However, you don’t have to be traditional and boring, a look at sofas online will help you see that there are some quirky options out there. The same can be said for beds, as you can be a little untraditional with your choice of headboard or frame, and the type of storage furniture you have such as drawers and wardrobes. Thin outside of the box and embrace the things that you like, not just with style, but with material and colour to.

Upcycle old pieces to give them a new lease of life

Maybe you have come across a piece of furniture that you love, and so want to give it a new lease of life. It could be that it is broken and in need of repair, or just needs a little love and updated. Upcycling furniture is a great way to add personality and make the piece is your home more unique and different. There are many guides online that can help you get started, and looking in charity shops or at boot sales for hidden gems could be the way forward.

Inject a theme into your home

It could be that you work better off themes, and so it might be worth looking at injecting a theme into your home to help you stay on track with the type of look and feel you are going for. This could be a colour theme, where you have similar tones of colours throughout your home. It might be that you want to embrace themes like Hygge, that has become popular recently and injects the comfort and warmth to a home. There are so many options that you could consider for your home.

Make features to embrace your personality

You might want to make the most of features when it comes to your home as this can be an easy way to inject some personality into it. This could be simply done with a feature wall, where you use wallpaper or a brighter colour to make something stand out more. It could be the inclusion of pictures around your home, maybe making gallery walls or adding pictures in frames to make it feel more personal to you.

Try different methods

Our homes are supposed to be the one place that you can feel at ease and most comfortable. So you may want to try and ensure that you have done what you can so that the atmosphere your home creates does exactly that for you. Decluttering and keeping a clean and tidy home is one way to do it. Many people swear by the Marie Kondo Konmari method where you only keep things in your home that spark joy. It could be a great concept to try when it comes to minimising and also decorating your home now and in the future.

Let’s hope these suggestions help you to make your house a home.
