Making memories AKA mangling mince pies!

Okay, so I know this is another Christmas-related post in November, but please bare with me! When I was growing up, one of the traditions I can remember in the run-up to Christmas, along with making the Christmas cake, was to make mince pies with my Mum, and bung them in the freezer, so by the time December came, we had a nice little stockpile.

I tried making some with Freddie and Sasha earlier this week, and it was fab this year, as both could actively help out. When I say ‘help out’, I mean squish, lick and generally mangle the pastry into some sort of mince pie, despite me telling them not to lick said mince pies! I have labelled this batch ‘immediate family only’, as I don’t reckon many people would be too keen to be served these up at our boxing day party if they knew the process of how they came about! They were definitely made with love though, and I really hope that this is a tradition that we can continue with F & S, just like I did as a small child. It’s so lovely to pass something on, and you definitely get the joy second time round as a parent.

Do you have any traditions that you want to pass on to your little ones?

That’s a lovely tradition and yay for the helpers! I love making mince pies, there’s something about the smell of them in the oven that is so very intensely Christmassy and I’m looking forward to having Kitty help me this year because I think she’s got to the stage where she really can help with chopping the apples and cutting out the pastry whereas in previous years it’s been more about playing with the leftovers!

This is such a lovely post. My Mum didn’t like mince pies so we never made them but I’ve started making them with the kids already, I love a Christmas tradition! x

I’m all for the festive posts in November- keep them coming! I am one of those weird people who dont like mince pies at all, neither does my husband- but I do like to see them as it makes me feel all Christmassy! We baked today- albeit they were Toy Story cupcakes! x

Such a sweet tradition to start, I’m not a mince pie fan and the one time I did try to make them was a disaster, but hubby does love them and I’m tempted to give it another go with O. He loves baking with mummy.
And I love Christmassey lists, keep them coming! xx

I love Christmas traditions like this! We always used to help stir the christmas pudding – you get to make a wish as you stir! I have to admit that I don’t really follow in my nana and mum’s footsteps when it comes to cooking though but later on, when I no longer have a two year old, I think this would be a fun activity! They are a brilliant tradition to have and obviously more for you guys 😉 I don’t like mince pies but my hubby would happily scoff about 10 in a row!

Oh they do look cute mangling their mince pies though! Obviously in Italy we don’t get mince pies *sniff* but we did open up and slice the first panettone of the season with great pomp and circumstance. You’ve given me an idea for something to do with the Bean when we stay with my in-laws in the UK in late December – it’ll be after Christmas but I think it’d still be okay to make a few more mince-pies, right? 🙂

You are my hero. Baking with tinies causes me all sorts of anxiety!! 🙂 Your mince pies look amazing though! Well done gorgeous Freddie and Sasha! Xx
