Love The Little Things

Welcome to my second week of showcasing all that I have found fabulous this last week!

I’m joining Morgana and co over at her ‘But Why Mummy Why?’ Blog, so if you fancy getting involved, then please do hop over to here- i’m hoping to do more of these posts now I’m back from holiday and getting the business up and running has settled down.

Here is what i’ve loved this last week…

Read:

The Sober Revolution - Calling Time on Wine O'Clock

I’ve just ordered the book ‘The Sober Revolution: Calling Time on Wine O’Clock’, after someone recommend it to me. I’ve always liked a drink (or 5!), and lately feel that I’ve been using wine as a bit of a crutch- I tend to pour a glass when I’m happy, stressed, to signify the end of the week, or just because the children are in bed. I also don’t have a very good ‘off’ button when I go out with friends, and hangovers don’t go well with small people. My body has been feeling tired lately and those pesky hangovers are lasting 3 or 4 days and I feel terrible and eat badly (I am OLD now!). So I’ve decided to cut out booze full-stop for 3 months (more on this in another blog post) to see if it changes the way I feel, and to prove to myself that I don’t need booze to unwind or have a good time. Apparently this book is easy reading, yet life-changing, and will change how I view drinking and our drinking culture. I’m not entirely convinced, but i’ll give it a good go and report back!

Do any of you not drink, or not drink much? How do you find it in terms of socialising? Do others comment on it?

I also found an interview with the comedienne, Sarah Millican, in the Radio Times from the other week, really thought provoking. She reccounts the night when she was at the Baftas, dressed up to the nines and felt a million dollars, only for critics to slate how she looked on her Twitter, like she was a piece of meat to be dissected, which burst her bubble. She talks about the main issues here being a feminist one (men don’t get this shit as much), a social media one, and people in general just not being nice. A lot of people could learn from this!

Watched:

I’ve watched zero telly this past week except being sucked into Britain’s Got Talent, which I’ve had on in the background whilst i’ve been working on the blog or the shop. I was really, really impressed with the illusionist Darcy Oake. Magicians aren’t normally my thing, but I couldn’t take my eyes off him (for many reasons! 😉 ).

I have also been appealing to my odd sense of humour and have been thoroughly enjoying (and laughing alone like a maniac!) whilst watching YouTube videos of people jumping out of random places and scaring people- seriously never gets old! I have been watching these whilst I should have been doing, you know, useful stuff. I am a child, I know…

Wore:

This last week I’ve been wearing my luvverly new T-Bar Block heels from Joe Browns  that I was sent to review, and they really are great, and the block heel is comfy and really on-trend! I’ll be wearing them again this weekend when I go out for dinner with mates.

I also have my eye on some of these boyfriend T-Shirts from ASOS, as I need some new basic t-shirts and these can be dressed up or down:

Heard:

This last week or so I’ve been listening to: Calvin Harris (on way to a wedding getting into party vibe)…

At the wedding there was an awesome moment post-midnight, where about 50 people were surrounding the bride and groom, linking arms and singing loudly and swaying to Oasis ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’ and it was an AMAZING goose-bumpy moment, one of those times where you just feel so GOOD with the world (all the bubbly might have also had something to do with it!)

I’ve also been listening to some 2002 The Streets, Kate Bush, Nouvelle Vague, The Middle East and Sam Smith. I’m so glad for Spotify these days!

Oh, and that bloody song from ‘Frozen’ has infiltrated my mind, and I fear I will never be rid of it!

 Made:

So since I last mentioned my little loves, I made a business! My online vintage crockery and accessories shop, ‘What Would Irene Do? (named after my Nan!),’ is now open for business via Etsy, and my website www.whatwouldirenedo.com is now live, and will tell you all you need to know!

There will be new stock added all the time, and I can’t wait to continue sourcing some lovely pieces.

And lasty…

Everyone should read ‘I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings’ by Maya Angelou, who died the other day aged 86.  This brilliant book documents her childhood of abuse and oppression in 1930s Deep South America. One of my favourite reads! // I love @rachscooze Instagram account- really interesting, detailed pics of her life with her baby son and her other interests and it is always conversational and mostly upbeat. I don’t know her, but she followed me and I followed back and she compels me to get involved commenting on her pics! I love Instagram accounts like this that I can interact with, so she has been a great find!// I’m loving eating more healthily after pigging out on holiday and nights out. I always feel tired and sluggish when I eat too many carbs and not enough fresh stuff, so it’s good to be back on track to healthy living again!

Hope you all had a good week!

Becky x

Thanks M, I’ll keep you posted on the book- it sounds silly but it’s quite a big thing for me to ditch the wine for a bit, but I enjoy a challenge!

I don’t know where to start! First, high five on the Sam Smith song. I am OBSESSED with him at the moment.
    And congratulations on the business.
I’ve just sat and watched the magician and his first audition…wow!!! He should just go straight through and win. Amazing.
I got an oversized tshirt from Primark and now want more, will definitely look on ASOS now xx

Thank you for your good wishes re the business 🙂 I don’t know why, but Sam Smith reminds me of Morrissey- the look, not the voice and that’s all I see when he’s not singing! I need to get myself to Primark again. I rely on online shopping too much as I hate going with the kids. At least these ASOS tshirts are quite reasonably priced! x

Interesting Little Loves Becky! I love your vintage crockery business! If I had a bigger house with more storage and no toddlers running around I would so be there 🙂 Loving those shoes and having begun watching that BGT clip I then got sucked into watching more and more BGT clips with my four year old and we both ended up collapsing in a fit of giggles watching Stavros Flatly (we’ve never done BGT before!). Have a great weekend X #littleloves

    • May 31, 2014 / 8:56 pm

Oh Sam, Stavros Flatly are IMMENSE! Still one of my all time favourite BGT acts (nope, I don’t watch it much… 😉 ). Glad you like my business, it’s my passion- just hard sometimes to juggle everything right now so hoping to build up slowly, I’m having to wake at 4.45am tomorrow morning to go to a fair that starts at 6am (On a Sunday, why?) to source some stock, so it’s a good job I like enjoy it! Hope you’re having a great weekend too x

Hi Becky – thanks for sharing your week and good luck with your business. I’m new to the Love the Little Things link and am enjoying finding out more about other bloggers. I will be interested to see how your sober revolution goes as I have been cutting back on my “wine o’clocks” recently but sometimes, after a long day, lack the will-power.

    • May 31, 2014 / 9:02 pm

Hi Emma, thanks for commenting! I’ll continue to update how I find the book. I find the hardest time of day for resisting a glass of wine or three is between 5 and 7pm- the kids are having tea and the end of the day is in sight! I’m trying to find another way of ‘rewarding’ myself that doesn’t involve booze. Hope you’re having a great weekend 🙂

I’m in love with your Etsy store! In fact I think the floral sugar bowl needs to come and live with me! Good Luck!

    • May 31, 2014 / 9:03 pm

Thank you so much! Feel free to let it come and live with you, why resist? 😉 Just tried to visit your blog but it says I can’t because the domain is about to expire- just thought i’d let you know.

Love the shoes and the tees. They are great for casual wear. Great business I will have to check it out. Great round of little loves this week full of great songs too! I haven’t read Maya’s book but it’s been on my list for awhile. Need to get it. Lovely post. #littleloves

I love Sarah Millican and I thought she looked fabulous! I didn’t know that some eejit had slagged her outfit off until I read it in your post but it really annoys me, not just when it happens to celebs. There are people at work who will quite happily slag off another person’s hair/clothes/shoes and it winds me up so much. I always tell them off for bullying, which is basically what it is and ask that if they insist on being mean then please don’t do it near me. They normally shut up after that ;D xx
