Little bits of life

809I haven’t written a post like this for aaages, but thought it would be nice to do a little ‘catch up’ post to look back on. I l love writing about home, style, trips and interiors, but realised that I hadn’t captured just the ‘day-to-day’ stuff that goes on in our lives for a little while. I don’t expect this to be wildly interesting for anyone else, but it’s the kind of stuff I’d love to look back on in several years time, to see what we were up to when the children were a certain age, and what we enjoyed doing. Each year I’m going to print off some of these blog posts to make a little scrap book, a kind of photo album with words, so we can look back and reminisce. I’m not an overly sentimental sort, but I do like this sort of thing!

Have a great Monday, and hope every one has a happy, productive week 🙂

You may have heard me mention in my other blog posts that I’ve recently become the owner of an Olympus Pen camera, and the other weekend was the first time I got it out to have a little play with (I was ill when it first arrived, so haven’t had much of a chance yet to become really aquainted with it!). Freddie and Sasha were blowing bubbles in the kitchen, so I quickly grabbed the camera. These aren’t staged, are rather rushed, and not particularly creative or artistic, but I’m already impressed with the quality of the Pen just purely snapping away on automatic mode. I can’t wait to see what it can do with a bit of thought!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAYesterday we made chocolate Easter nests with the children. Yes, I know it’s a little early for these, but we need to make the most of the fact that mini eggs are only around for another month (I’m obsessed right now, NOT good for the waistline!). Seriously, I often think we spend so much time ‘pinning’ and thinking of all the seasonal things we’re going to do, that we don’t actually get round to doing half of them, and then feel like we’ve ‘failed’, or get disappointed with ourselves. Well, i’m going against that and just doing things anyway, when we feel like, even if they’re a little early, haha! AND it takes the pressure off. The kids loved them, and they’re dangerously moreish!

A little ‘me time’ coffee shop stop. There’s this amazing cafe near us, which I love to visit but it isn’t overly child-friendly and quite pricey, so I visit once a month or so on a day when the kids are at school and preschool, and properly treat myself. They have the best coffee around, and this gluten-free banana, coconut, raspberry and chocolate chip cake was just divine! I think it’s so easy as a mum to feel guilty about treating ourselves, or spending time during the day without the kids/ not working, but it’s so important to recharge. I look forward to my visit here all the time!

…and in other cafe-related news, I had a working breakfast at another fabulous cafe near us, Fee and Brown, and had this almond croissant the size of my head! Not the healthiest, my word, was it worth it!

I was happy/sad to send off this beautiful vintage serving bowl that a customer had bought from my shop. It sounds silly, as obviously I’m really happy to sell things, but at the same time I always feel a little sad to see them go. I definitely have hoarding tendencies!

Scooter time on the way to swimming lessons with this little lady. I love the bones of her, but my god, is she being challenging at the moment! Not long after this photo was taken, we had a whopping tantrum on the bus on the way back from seeing friends. The bus was packed and she wouldn’t sit on my lap properly and it wasn’t safe at all, so I said “they’ll be no park and we’ll get off the bus if you don’t sit on my lap nicely”. This request was declined, so off the bus we went… and all hell broke loose! Tantrums galore, which involved her re-boarding the bus and nearly ending up half way to Bromley but thankfully I got her off again- nightmare. This parenting lark sure is tough at times (and rather embarrassing). She’s smart, funny, cuddly, but strong-willed and stubborn as a mule- I’m hoping this is ‘just a phase’!

Beautiful, spring tulips in the kitchen. I hadn’t bought flowers for the house ‘just because’ for a long time, and they really, really perk me up and make me happy. Note to self: buy more often!

The Anthropologie deer in the living room is also dressed for spring now too! Daffs are probably one of the cheapest things to lift your mood, I love this time of year.

Last Monday Freddie had a school inset day, so I decided to treat him to Mummy/son day out in Greenwich. We went to the observatory, had a play in the park, built with blocks in the Maritime Museum, had a riverside lunch at Zizzis, and then finally caught a boat from Greenwich to London Bridge to get the train back home. It was so lovely, and the weather was great- I really need to do this more with him, as S gets more of my time purely from not being at school yet. This is one of my favourite views in the whole of London, when I get to the top of the hill I always feel amazing!

All this cold weather has got us tucking back into comfort food- stews, soups, oven-baked potatoes with warm fillings, and a delicious Moroccan lamb and apricot tagine, a big hit with all of us.

I went to an 8am yoga class yesterday morning- I mentioned on Instagram that I’m not sure I know myself anymore! I’m trying to go weekly now, as I am probably the least flexible person there is, despite doing a fair amount of gymnastics and sport as a child. I’m hoping more yoga will help my very tight hamstrings and lower back, and also give me an hour of calm and reflection.

…and finally….

I had the best Mother’s Day yesterday, spoilt rotten by Adam and the children, who also cooked a steak dinner for me and my amazing Mum. A got a huge lie in (the dream!) and coffee, juice and a bacon sarnie in bed. The kids made me cards/pictures, and I was particularly tickled by the one Freddie made at school with a drawing of me on the front. The resemblance is uncanny, no?! It’s things like this that really make me feel like a Mum, and I couldn’t be more grateful for my little family, especially at a time that is hard for so many who have lost their own mums, or have their struggles to become mums themselves.

I love these flowers Adam and the children bought me, and these little faces make me SO happy 🙂
