Just Because Your Utility Room Is Where You Do Chores, Doesn’t Mean It Should Be Bland

laundry basketOf all the rooms in your house, your utility room is the most unloved (except the loft). And that’s a tragedy. After all, when you think about it, you spend quite a bit of your time in it. Ideally, therefore, you’d like it to offer pleasant surroundings. At the very least, you need something beautiful to look at while you do the ironing.

Clearly, a utility room is a functional space, so it won’t wind up looking like your living room. But just because you do your chores there, doesn’t mean that it has to be Puritanical. You can still turn it into something interesting.

Here’s what to do.

Add Temporary Wallpaper

Laundry rooms can look a little dull and unloved. Typically, the walls are whitewash, and the floor is either tiled or sterile and boring black vinyl. You know the look.

There’s a growing number of people, therefore, who are adding temporary wallpaper in an attempt to make the space more visually exciting. As the name suggests, this type of wall covering is not meant to last. It will probably flake and peel eventually. But if you opt for inexpensive products, you can transform your utility space for a surprisingly low cost.

Don’t Be Afraid To Add Plants And Artwork

Adding plants and artwork is part and parcel of transforming any room in your home. So it should come as no surprise that the pros recommend you do this in your laundry room too.

If you don’t have a lot of floor space, don’t be afraid to place plants on your window sills. And don’t be frightened to choose big, bold pieces of art that cover the walls. After all – it’s a laundry room. It doesn’t matter if it looks a little eccentric.

Build-In Your Laundry

Building-in your laundry is one of the most powerful things you can use to make your utility space feel more like a regular room. When everything fits together, it adds much-needed flow.

There are loads of examples across the internet of people pulling this off successfully. See here for Bunnings laundry and their solution to the problem. As you can see, the utility space is presented just like any other room in the house.

Put Your Detergents In Attractive Jars

Old cardboard boxes and vulgar plastic bottles do little to elevate a room, especially utility spaces. That’s why it is such a good idea to use alternative means of storage. Decant your powders and potions into attractive glass urns and jugs, and use those instead,

Include Furniture

Does your laundry room feel a little sparse? If so, it is probably because you don’t have any furniture in it yet. Just adding something as understated as a stool can be all you need to transform the feel of the room.

Of course, if you’re lucky and have more space, you can really go to town. Why not place a large chaise-longue or recliner in the middle of the room so you can relax in comfort while you wait for the dryer to finish?
