Thinking of upgrading your home appliances? Here are things to consider that could help you determine whether you’re due an upgrade.
Is your appliance broken (and can it be repaired)?
If appliances aren’t broken there may be no reason to replace them. However, if you’ve been experiencing problems, it could be the perfect time for an upgrade.
Some appliances can be easily repaired. If the appliance has been reliable up until now and repairs are cheap, it may be more sensible to fix your current appliance rather than buying a new one.
You can save money on repairs by shopping around for quotes. You may also be able to source your own parts – you can get what you need here. If your appliances is only a few years old, you may even find that it’s still in its warranty, which could allow you to get it repaired for free.
Repairs generally aren’t worthwhile if they cost more than 50% of the value of the appliance. Certain repairs may also be very complex and you may find that not all technicians are able to carry them out – this may include complex electrical faults or repairs involving parts that are difficult to source.
Consider the age of the appliance
Appliances may be worth upgrading if they are old. All appliances have an average life expectancy after which wear and tear is likely to set in and you may then need to make more frequent repairs. The average life expectancy of appliances is around 10 years – some appliances may not last this long such as microwaves and toasters, while appliances such as refrigerators and ovens may last up to 20 years.
Appliances that are over 20 years old may be particularly worth replacing as they are likely to not be very energy-efficient and may even pose safety concerns. A newer appliance is certain to save you money in energy bills and could be a lot safer.
Does your current appliance meet your needs?
Another reason to update appliances could be that you’ve outgrown their capabilities. Perhaps your current refrigerator is too small to store all the food you need to store? Or perhaps you’ve recently got into baking and need a bigger oven with better heat control?
If this is the case, you need to also be certain that you have the space in your home for a bigger appliance and that you also have the expertise to use it.
