Important Things To Do When Moving Into A New Home

There is a lot to think about when you’re moving into a new home. We all consider steps such as packing and unpacking to be the only major parts, but there are other things you need to think about that make a big difference to you settling in.

Have a look at some of the important things you need to do when moving into a new home for you to settle in properly:

Do A Walkthrough

As well as getting a home inspection before you sign on the dotted line, you should complete a walkthrough of your new house when it is empty. Before you start to set up up your furniture and get unpacked, take a look around. This is best before moving day, if possible. Make sure:

  • Any agreed repairs have been completed
  • Everything has been included that should have been
  • Check everything is in working order
  • Make a list of any renovation work you may want to complete

Child And Pet Proof

If this applies to you, one of the first things you should do is to do some initial childproofing to keep everyone safe until you get completely set up. It may be a good idea to set up areas that are child or pet-free for things like discarded packing materials, or where fragile boxes can be placed. If you can’t get a friend or family member to look after them on moving day, consider setting up their room first so they can get comfortable and stay out of the way when you are moving heavier items.

Make Sure That Your Utilities Are Set-Up

You likely took care of arranging for your utilities to be ready for you before your move. So, now is the time to make sure this has happened and is up and running. On moving day, verify that your broadband, water, gas, electric, heating and cooling, and house phone are set up.

Do A Deep Clean

This is probably the last thing that you want to do after moving, however, this is probably one of the best times to do a full deep clean. You could take the opportunity to clean all the floors, bathrooms, cupboards, and rooms such as your kitchen and bathroom before you even unpack, and then just give it a once over to remove any settled dust once unpacked. If you don’t have time or want to remove some stress, you could look for a local cleaning service to do it for you.

Moving into a new home is well known for being a bit overwhelming, however, following the steps listed above is sure to help make your transition smoother. It may seem like quite a lot to add to your list, but if you are feeling overwhelmed remember, you can always ask for help. The sooner you take care of tasks like these the sooner you will start to feel right at home and settle in. Do you have any other tips you could share in the comments below?
