Baking Cupboard Makeover

Right, let’s cut to the chase: Everyone who knows me best, knows that I am an organisational freak, and this project will be of no surprise to them! This aint one of the ‘fun’ organisational projects, but necessary and slightly tedious, but my word, once you’ve finished you’ll be in organisational heaven. This is an project so anal and detailed, it would be right at home on one of my favourite blogs ‘I Heart Organizing’! <swoon>

If you bake a lot, like myself, you can empathise with the sheer amount of baking paraphernalia that comes with your passion. My dedicated baking cupboard, has, quite frankly, turned into an embarrassing tardis of baking ‘stuff’, and it badly needed sorting. I didn’t know what ingredients/tools I had anymore, leading to annoying duplication buys, and therefore produce going needlessly out of date.

First off, I made a list of everything in my cupboard, what had a home already, and what desperately needed a new one.

Then, I took a trip to the organisational Mecca that is IKEA. Here, I bought a selection of jars and the odd storage box as per my list, took them home, and got cracking. (NB, if you want to amuse a 3 year old for an afternoon, Ikea is a surpisingly good place to do so. “Wow, Mummy, look at all those CHAIRS!”, “Look, Mummy, a mini house with a TOILET!”, “WOW, LOADS of KNIVES!”).

I then had the rather painful job of emptying the cupboard- the kitchen looked like a bomb had hit it, and the children had a field day running off with rolling pins/half-used packets of desiccated coconut/silicone moulds:

Then, using my trusty label maker (Best £10 ever!), I started labeling each jar according to its future contents:

Once i’d done the jars, I moved on to my collection of food colourings and tube icings. This is what they were shamefully housed in before…

This Ikea storage box is perfect, as it has removable compartments, and a clip on lid:

Next, I decided to give my cutters, edible cake decorations, candles and cake toppers a new home. They were being stored in slightly tatty, nondescript chocolate tins, but I had an idea for smarter homes for each of them!

The candles went into an old Christmas gingerbread man tin (I knew there was a reason for hanging onto this):

And the other bits went into some of my late Nan’s beautiful vintage tins, that I had kept but hadn’t found a good use for yet.

Aren’t they just gorgeous?

My old flour jars, that were nearly empty anyway, got cleaned and then filled with fresh flour:

My cake cases were re-sorted, and put back in their spaghetti jar home (they have lived in one of these for aaages):

Once totally empty, I cleaned the cupboard thoroughly, and began replacing the items. It was so good to see that everything had a place!

And here we have it- a baking cupboard Mary Berry would be proud of!
