Birthday trip to The Shard

On Tuesday it was Loverboy’s birthday (31!), so I decided it was high time that we actually went inside the thing we see every morning from our bedroom window, and the building we greet every time we hop off the train at London Bridge Station: The Shard.

Arriving late morning with lunch planned for afters, Adam, myself, plus two ankle biters arrived at the 69th floor first viewing platform via two lifts- and what a view it was! Breathtaking! The weather was dry, if a little hazy, but we could still see for miles via the 360 degree enclosed platform. Freddie was particularly impressed as you could get a really clear view of the rail network in and out of London Bridge, keeping him amused for a very long time. Sasha was itching to climb the stairs to the next platform on floor 72, but not quite so keen when we got there- I think the two window cleaners zipping up and down the windows (see pic) gave her a bit of a fright! Now that is a job I could never do. I felt obviously pretty safe up in The Shard, and loved it, but generally speaking heights really aren’t my thing- if I ever went on ‘I’m a Celeb’ in the jungle, give me kangaroo balls over being dangled over something any day! Although best if kangaroo balls aren’t dangled either. Either way…

So, we ended up spending about half an hour up there, before the kids got a bit restless, but that was plenty of time to enjoy the experience. Next time we’re definitely going back sans offspring to enjoy one of the restaurants and bars within The Shard- Can’t wait! The trip to the top is well worth the money, and something I’m glad i’ve ticked off my London ‘to do’ list (if I had an official one!).

    The pictures are great.
I want to go to the Shard too, but don’t know if it would be a good idea to take my 2 year old with me 🙂

Beautiful pictures! I would love to visit the Shard, but I don’t know if it would be a good idea to take my 2 year old with me (he tend to get restless too) 🙂

It really is great, and actually somewhere you can successfully enjoy with small people!
