Good morning! Now we are over all things Halloween until next year, I thought it would be a nice change to have something totally different to start this week- an easy 1st Birthday cake idea using printable cake bunting.
Above is the cake that I made for Sasha’s 1st birthday back in May. After making a few quite complicated cakes for other birthdays/events, I thought it might be nice to keep it simple, classic, yet quite girly. We weren’t having a big party for her either, just a little tea party for a few family/friends, so a proper British, Victoria sponge seemed the way forward!
I always use Mary Berry‘s ‘Perfect Victoria Sandwich’, the recipe for which you can find HERE .
I used plain white icing, with rainbow ball sprinkles for the topping (I LOVED these as a child!).
Then I added the cake bunting banner (letters cut out, then hung by white thread, and taped onto two red/white striped straws, for that retro feel). I discovered the free cake bunting printable on a fab website via Pintrest, and you too can find it HERE at Bow-Occasions.
Finally, I decided add the finishing touch in the form a vintage Disney Thumper ‘Wade’ figure that I had inherited as a child. I feel this made the cake really timeless, and as I said before, girly, without going overboard. You could add all kinds of figures in Thumper’s place- a personal favourite of mine are Babycham Deer figures like this one . It’s nice if the figure has a bit of history behind it, and then your little one can keep it, maybe to pass on if they have children of their own.
Add a single blue candle, and there you go- an easy, retro-themed, first birthday cake!
Happy Monday all, hope you have a great start to your week!
I would also love to know what you did for your child’s 1st birthday cake!
This is so sweet!! I love the bunting such a simple yet lovely idea!! I love that you can tell this cake is home made (please don’t take that the wrong way it looks amazing!!!) its got a really classic feel to it and you can tell lots of love went into it!! I’m feeling inspired for Arthur’s cake, I’m a bit baking shy and need to ‘man up’ a little make a decision and go with it!!!! Thank you for the inspiration 🙂 xxx

Aaah thank you lady! I’m not offended at all- I too love the ‘made with love’ look, and it’s really easy to make. We were having a family tea party and I wanted a bit of a vintage theme, so thought this cake would go well, and probably the only chance i’d cake to do a sweet one like this before other cake requests are made! xx
