5 Benefits of Bamboo Flooring

With our current house renovation having commenced this week, my thoughts as project manager have been turning to making final decisions with regards to different kitchen and bathroom purchases. Do we want flat tiles or beveled tiles? What sort of range cooker shall we buy? What flooring would best suit the kitchen and bathroom?

With the latter in mind, I’ve been looking at all different types of flooring, including bamboo flooring, a type that prior to my research I didn’t know much about. Here are some of the benefits that I’ve discovered when it comes to this particular kind of flooring:

Easy Maintenance

Bamboo flooring appears pretty easy to maintain. You just have to sweep or vacuum it regularly to remove small debris i.e. small child food fallout, and you can also damp mop it occasionally as needed. Low maintenance = my kinda flooring.

Eco-Friendly

Bamboo is made from natural vegetation. I’m not sure why, but (like the panda) I bizarrely thought that bamboo was an endangered species. This, I can confirm, is NOT the case- the bamboo plant is a highly renewable resource that is able to grow to maturity in as little as three years. Hardwood trees can take up to 20 years to mature, making bamboo flooring a great, planet-friendly option, and meaning you can polish your eco halo.

Durability

Before I read up on Bamboo flooring and bamboo in general, I was worried that it might be a softer, weaker material (again, I have no idea why I thought this!). However, I’ve been proved wrong once more as there are certain types of bamboo that can be extremely strong, hard, and durable. What you need is natural, un-carbonised bamboo for your bamboo flooring that is properly harvested and manufactured. When it comes in this form it more than equals the strength of red oak. Strand woven bamboo can be even stronger.

Price

Bamboo flooring is priced at about the same level as the majority of other hardwood floors, something that surprised me as I thought it might be more expensive. Make sure you purchase your bamboo flooring from a reputable, quality retailer, and be sure to avoid dodgy, bargain basement materials as they are often lower quality castoffs and are therefore a false economy.

Stylish

Let’s face it- Bamboo flooring really does look the business! It instantly makes the space look distinct and different, yet elegant, all at the same time. Visitors will think your room looks ace, with an air of quality, without necessarily even knowing why!

Would you consider bamboo flooring within your home?
